New here, got a couple questions
« on: August 05, 2007, 09:42:29 AM »

I just bought a 2007 SE Ultra Classic (blue) on Ebay, will be flying to Charleston to ride it back to Milwaukee tomorrow morning. The seller lives in Myrtle Beach, selling it through a friend in Charleston that owns American Biker LLC.

1) Does anybody on here know the bike? 957 miles on it, I was told the owner trailered it to Sturgis last year and rode it around there, and trailered it to CA to ride the coast. The Ebay lister is Trey at American Biker, seems like an up-front person but it's not his bike.

2) Can anybody give me a run-down of any common problems known to this year/model? 110in and 6-sp. Any servisce bulletins or suggestions for things that should be done to ensure reliability?

3) I have a 2001 Heritage that has a Zippers muscle kit in it (and too much other stuff to list). Dyno'd at 95hp/100Tq. Will the SEUC be comparable performance-wise?

Thanks a bunch, I can't wait til tomorrow, unless somebody on here knows the bike and has sme suprises for me.

Welcome Kickstand,
I don't know this exact bike but the one big thing on the 110" motors that has been mentioned a lot here is the overheating issue. Early signs would be the yellowing of the 110" labels at the top of the jugs.
may want to look around in this section for more info:

Congratulations on the new bike.  As far as the motor and trans,  the 07 tranny had a straight cut 5th gear and some say it whines other have no issues, as for the motor read the twin cam section there is alot on the 110 motor there.  Check and see how much warranty is left on the bike.  You can get it extended to 7 year unlimited mileage if you are at all nervous about the bike.

Welcome to the site Kickstand and congrats on getting a "Smurf".  As VaEagle mentioned, the 110's have heat issues primarily, but that can be pretty much taken care of by changing out the stock pipes and putting true duals, freer-flowing mufflers, free-flowing air filter and back plate, and getting the ECM re-tuned to bring the air/fuel ratio down.  (Due to EPA requirements, the AFR is very high and causes the bike to run hot.)  Some of the 110 owners have had louder than normal noises coming from the rocker boxes, due to improper clearancing.  And also some have, around 5k miles, notices their rear cylinder head gasket starting to seep oil.  I haven't had, knock on wood, any of those issues with mine.  I changed out pipes, etc. before I took delivery.  The machine will have the remainder of the two-year warranty on it, so if you do get any of those issues, they will be covered.  I don't know this bike personally, but in my opinion, you won't go wrong with it. :)   Enjoy the ride.

Thanks for the info all of you. After reading through a bunch of threads on here, I'll want to do some mods to the bike as soon as I get it back here this week - I still have the Heritage to ride so it's a good time to get it done. It has not had the 1000-mile service done and I'll be putting 1000 miles on it right away so there will be close to 2k miles on it when I get back here to Milwaukee. the riding will be all highway/high speed so I don't think I'll have too many heat issues if I keep air flowing. This is what I plan to do when I get back (in this order);

1) Change oil to Amsoil in the motor, Redline Shockproof in the tranny, and Redline MTL in primary. Not sure why the bike comes new with synthetic, that is usually a no-no until it's broken in as the syn does not seat rings as well as conventional. I run syn in everything I have - after the motor os broken in.
2) High Flow AC (can't imagine why it doesn't already come that way from the MoCo, it IS supposed to be a HP bike)
2) Rinehart or VH True Duals, I've had Rineharts on the Heritage for 3 years and love them.
3) SERT or PCIII, I'll have to look into the advantages/disadvantages of both.

Overall, it doesn't sound like a wealth of problems for a 1st year motor - and people have already found ways to get the heat down to an acceptable level. I might go for the extended warranty too depending on cost vs how comfortable I am with the bike after the ride back from SC. I paid $30,300 for it on Ebay with 950 miles on it, not sure what some of you think about that price but I can't even find one around here, even the 2008's are spoken for.

Let me just add, regarding the extended warrant, that it's not a price set in stone.  It is negotiable and if your local dealership isn't willing to bargain then shop around. You can get it any time before your factory warranty runs out.  HD of Chicago offers a 20% discount..........

Kickstand,

There is no reason to worry about break-in with synthetic oil, that is just an old wives tale that has no validity with today's engines.  If it was a problem, you wouldn't see most of the world's top auto manufacturers using synthetics for factory fill (Porsche, BMW, etc.).

I think we've all felt the same way about the air cleaner.  The CVO Softails and lately even the RK have come with the open air cleaner (still has the cheap crap filter though), but the E-Glides do not.  We've surmised that it may have to do with sound levels with the lower fairings, but don't really know that for a fact.

Kickstand,
Many folks are saying the synthetic oil has a higher temp range so the factory was trying to protect the 103" and 110" motors from oil that failed due to higher running temps especially on bikes with fairings and lowers.
As far as the open air cleaner grc is correct in that most sources say it's an EPA noise thing and the open back is noisy with lowers.
As far as choosing SERT vs. PCIII most here say go with what ever your tuner is best at using. You do have some unique features to consider like your automatic compression releases to consider and the tuner has to be set for them.
On exhaust you can't go bad with either of your choices. You may enjoy reading the section on exhausts. I did some research and called V&H as well as S&S to get their ideas and they said since I was interested more in midrange torque than max. HP I should keep the stock head pipes and use a slip-on. They both said true duals would run cooler but they said I may loose some torque. I was deciding between the V&H ovals and S&S SPOs. I went with S&S SPOs and love them, they have a deep throaty sound but not annoying. They are strange to look at but I like that too.
From what you have said I think you got a great deal!
Enjoy the ride!

Well, I picked it up and rode 1150 miles back to WI in 90-100 degree heat with no issues. Had the oil changed in Tennessee, I'll take it in for the 1000 mi service after I put the pipes on it next week. Runs great and a very comfortable ride. Does not appear to have any seepage from either head gasket so maybe I won't have that problem. I'll have the dealer put the Stage 1 air cleaner and backplate on and adjust the A/F ratio when I take it in next week.

Another question on the exhaust. The seller said the only change to the bike was that he added SE slip-ons - which are definitely there. The head pipes do not look at all like the 2008 stock pipes (that's the only brochure I have - the bike is a 2007) that have a connection on the right side between the front and rear header. The exhaust is separate from the front cylinder all the way to the back, and the rear pipe makes a 180 degree turn out of the head to the left side of the bike and is also separate all the way to the rear. There is no connection between the 2 pipes. Are these the stock headers or did the previous owner already put true duals on it? If so, I just saved $900 on new pipes.

Yep, you got true duals.  A definite plus..another reason why you didn't feel excessive heat.  I would venture to guess that they downloaded the equivalent of SERT map 84, if he didn't already have it SERT'd.  (If he did, I hope he gave you the SERT)  That will run you fine until you get it peaked and tweaked at your 1k service.  Congrats on the new ride and let's see some pics!!!!!
