Easy seat repair turns to sh*t
« on: August 05, 2007, 09:50:44 PM »

When I originally put my Corbin on, I had to bend the front tab so I could get the rear screw in place.  Now that the bumpers have settled, the nose of the seat had a little up and down movement.

I removed the seat, bent the tab, reinstalled the seat and screw.  Being the anal f**k that I am, I removed the seat a 2nd time so I could tweak the tab a litle more for less movement.  When reinstalling the rear screw, I heard a clickty clack as something hit the floor.  I still had the screw and found the nutsert and clip next to the rear tire.

Removed the LH saddle bag and did not have clearance between tire and fender to reinstall nutsert from the bottom.  Pulled out the Condor wheel chock and jacked up rearend with a car jack under the crossbrace in front of the rear tire.  Removed rear lower 440 shock bolts and gained room to put in the nutsert and reinstall the clip.

When lowering the back end so I could reinstall the shock bolts, when I twisted the handle of the jack it moved more than I needed and the LH lower shock caught and out went the lower bushing and metal sleeve.  I tried for 15-20 minutes to reinstall the lower shock bushing.  I then removed the LH shock and tried again to reinstall the double lip bushing.  I could see myself messing up a finger or two.  Finally after another 20 minutes of not installing the bushing, I took the bushing over to the bench grinder and modified one side of the flanged lip a little and then went in with only a little effort.

This is how most of my SIMPLE repairs end up.  I could never work flat rate.

Unfortunately, "I know only enough to be dangerous" fits me to a "T"..

I don't know how I'll ever get the handlebar heaters installed.  That's another story for the winter time project.

I'd bet we've all been there and done that to some extent Bob.  I know sure as hell I have.  Look at it this way, at least you had an excuse to say "nutsert" with a straight face.... :drink:

While not quite a "true" nutsert, close enough for what we are discussing.

here is the trick if it happens again (and it will)..to replace the the "nutsert", thread a long wire-tie through it and pull it up through the fender and insert the clip, push the tie back out..piece of cake and takes 2 minutes tops

Embarrassed, why?

Embarrassing is when you read here that you should use a magnet when taking out the lower screws for the fairing , and then you don't.  :nixweiss:

Right you are....  Although a magnet is definitely advisable when removing the fairing, I always locktight studs in the lower fairing, so the task becomes starting nuts onto studs, rather then trying to find the threaded holes with the screws -exponentially easier task..

Both 2lane and Hd-dude told me the same thing which I have done.  The only downside is the studs catching on wiring on the remove/install of the fairing off the bike.  Even with everything tied up tight, they still catch and my studs aren't longer than necessary.  Definitely easier for me to start the nuts than the screws and get them cross threaded.
