first aid to an almost dead 110"
« on: August 08, 2007, 07:28:29 PM »

I have now put 10000 miles (or 16000 km as we use in Europe) on my 2007 CVO Ultra and I simply can't live with it being SO slow anymore. It has been "tuned down" in order to comply with the emission and noice regulations of EU. Yes - they actually do that  :)
I have just got hold on a racetuner and I know a harleymekanic who can fix the original exaust so it will be able to breathe and sound a little better. But I want more. I'm thinking a little work on the cylindres, new pistons and cams etc.Any suggestions?

Gaaa! The horror...Sorry dude.  If it has to have an annual breathalizer exam you'll have may have to do the Tmax thing and keep a spare exhaust and air filter aside for the inspection time after which you swap it back to normal...lots o wrenchin in your future I see...At leaset the beer is better there... Stay the course.. Peace

Johnby,

I would suggest the same package I shared with hoist to you.   You can continue to use stock pistons, they deck your heads a tiny bit bringing the compression up to 9.6-9.8 to 1 and do some porting and polishing to your heads.
595 cam from Wes Brown.

The only other thing you would need from there is to get a slightly larger throttlebody so that your motor can breathe and take advantage of the porting and you should be easily able to obtain 115-120 torque / 105-110 horsepower.

Howie has gone a bit further with the S&S intake and a 58mm throttle body and 2 into 1 pipe and is getting approx 130/120.   Not sure what your after, but the cam is very rideable as I also have it in my stock bike.  without headwork I am at approx 120 torque and 105 horsepower with rineharts, harley roll your own and k&n air filter.

Miker,
If Howie had an emissions test, he would be SOL
The 2007 Emission requirements is what drove the engine heat up into "Thermal Runaway".
We all are suffering from that.

Ya got me on this one, not sure if they do or don't or if they do whether it applies to cars only or cars and bikes or if it is a new vehicle if it gets some number of years before it has to be tested.

Best to ask Howie, or one of the other new yorkers.

HMMMMMMM

A stock bike HUH.
But has a 595 cam from Cyclerama.

Yup using that as an example then I guess Otis does have a stock bike!

Bikes don't have emissions tests here. Yet. They're talking about it. Nothing here has ever been retroactive. But you never know these days. The bike is so much more efficient now. I have to believe it would still pass! It's not an issue now, so it's time to just enjoy this sweet motor! ;) Hoist! 8)

Kingdog,

Yes it works with the 10.5 to 1 compression.   You will need new springs on the heads the stock ones are cutting it toooooooo close.   If your getting any headwork done it is no problem if your not it would be a consideration you have to make, but since you would be switching to 10.5 to 1 pistons from the flat tops you would have the heads off anyway so again it is not a problem.

.053 timing

intake open 22.0  close 44.0  lift 595  rocker ratio 1.625

exhaust open 50 close 12

intake duration 246
exhaust  242

Harry,
Where does the torque come in on these cams.  I'm sure peak horsepower is up around 6200 rpms, but I'm looking for something that hit's the torque at around 2500 rpms and pulls strong the rest of the way up the power band.  I'm more into driveable-range torque then hp numbers up in the stratosphere of the rpm range where I don't run.  Thanks.

Oop, this was to KingDog, sorry Charlie! (I always wanted to say that!) ;D

That's partially the cam, patially the other components (exhaust, intake, TB, etc.) and partially the Tune. There are so many variables, that the components you use have major impact on the overall results. As I explained to you in the other thread, your components should support this cam. With the proper tune, it makes close to max TQ from 1800 & up. But it really kicks in hard at about 3500. With 112 ft-lbs @ 1800, it didn't matter if you were on the cam yet. You can roll on/ride fine at any RPM. But it really sings at 3500 and up. Then it pulls like a mother. You don't need it peaking out too low if the engine makes enough power. It'll kill the top if you peak too low. Give Wes and Joe a call is my best advice! ;)

Redevil,

It runs from about 2600 up to about 5800 really kicking in strong around 3000 and going up.   I don't have headwork yet so Howie's is the first 110 with the headwork.

If your looking for more down low wes has a cam like a 570 lift that comes on strong and dies around 4500 rpm, but you can not use it with compression.   You would have to stay around 9-9.5 max and then you could also do headwork for breathing.

These would the best choices and the ones we (Wes) and I discussed when I was investigating parts / pieces to do a build.

Harry,
Thanks, that's what I'm looking for.  I do a lot of two-up riding, and the better half isn't into speed, but need the torque cuz we like to ride the mountain roads alot.   I'm not looking to do a build like Howie did.  I'm going to leave the top end the way it is.  Just want to look into cams that would bump up my torque a bit more. Thanks for the info, I'll put those in my list of things to get.  ;)
