Sounds to me like you may have a short in the heated grips.  I recall FR8TRN had the issue and possibly others as well.

I had a short but never rode in the rain with it.

Yep, I had my grips changed in May because the originals stopped working. I noticed on the new grips when they are in the off position and my hand is resting against the switch housings I sometimes get what feels like a bee sting. It also seems to happen more when coasting down a hill with the throttle backed off. I checked the grips with a digital meter, ignition on, engine not running found the left grip had 12 volts and the right grip had 7 volts and if the grips are turned on past 2 the voltage shuts off. With engine running the left grip had 14v and the right had 9v. Today riding with shorts on when my right knee touched the air filter cover it also gets zapped.

I had the scoot in a couple of weeks ago for this and they said they could not find anything. I guess they were doing all the checks with the grips turned on. I proved to them there was power in the grips and they then checked with a test light. The light lit up then they were convinced something is wrong. At the same time there was an 07 CUSE there so they checked the grips on it and they were ok. They were going to contact HD and also order a new set. They did not get back to me but I am going to contact them this week and I am also considering contacting the NTSB.

The grips and seat were both turned off. I asked the service guys if they have had this happen before and they said no. It goes in for the 15000 mile service next week they are going to look at it then.  As always thanks for the help.

Be sure and have them check the wiring where it goes thru the handlebars.  These grips are not made for internal wiring, but the MOCO decided to put them on the CUSE anyway.  My service manager said that the wires are being pinched where they go into the handlebars and that is what's causing most of the failures.

all the wiring was checked and it is ok. the problem is a short when the control dial is in the 0-2 position. in this position the grips do not get warm and there is power in the outside surface of the grip. once the dial is turned past 2 the grips start to get warm and the power that was in the outside of the grip disappears. since others have complained about the same issue there is probably many many owners that don't realize there is a problem. So do you think MOCO would quiver after reading a newspaper headline that reads "BIKER CRASHES AFTER LETTING GO OF THE HANDLE BARS BECAUSE OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK". my dealer says they had so many problems with these grips they stopped selling them. they get 1 more chance at fixing them and if it is not successful i am considering the LEMON LAW. i am also reporting the problem to the (NTSB) National Transportation Safety Board. i love my bike but it has been plagued with problems since day 1 and for what it cost it should be perfect. i have sheets and sheets of warranty repair instances that backs it all up.

We're all with you on the warranty issues.

Many of us have the same short or had it and poorly functioning grips.

I say go for it.

Got my bike back today after I drop ed it off on Friday(yes they work on sunday) they could not figure out what was wrong with the hand grips until after they took it for a test ride after the service was done, The tech was sitting at a light and got zapped. He brought it back took the grips of and the wire on the throttle side was frayed at the ends he cut them off taped them off and they are ordering new grips. The bike goes back in on the 10th to changes them out.At lest they no what the problem is now.Any one else having problems with the grips tell them to check the ends of the wires. The reason for the wires being frayed was the throttle was lose, witch I have complained about be for.All will soon be good again.

Hey Barry, I lurk more than anything here now, stick my nose in where it's not wanted sometimes too. ;)

Yeah they think it's great.....as long as they ain't gotta feel it.

Bad part is I'd told the dealer it was doing it when I took it in for the first service, felt it thru a cut I had in my finger, they couldn't find anything wrong and neither one of us (me having done electronics for 20+yrs) thought to put a voltmeter on it......damn grips had full battery on em.  Ain't enough to hurt ya but sure makes for a shocking ride.
