Viscosity and leaking heads
« on: August 25, 2007, 06:29:44 PM »

It seems that maybe this multi grade oil we all use maybe too light for the heat?  Possibly a straight weight oil might not be able to get by the head gasket.  Same with my tranny leak, maybe with straight heavy gear oil it wouldn't leak.

Thought?

And maybe if H-D quit using chit for brains along with cheap Chinese parts no one would be having these issues at all.

If the design and the parts were good, even the lightest weight oil known to man would not leak.  The oil viscosity, or the fact it is synthetic and not dino oil, has absolutely nothing to do with the leak issue.  Trust me, you don't want to use straight 50 or 60 weight oil in a modern engine, or 140 in your trans.  Good lubrication relies on proper flow at all temps, and heavy straight weight lubes don't flow worth 10 cents at low temps.

There obviously is a design and/or manufacturing issue that needs to be addressed by the MoCo.  Short of rebuilding the engine yourself with better quality aftermarket parts, I don't see any other actions you could take on your own to correct the problem.

I think my oil leak was caused by the group who opened for Montgomery Gentry! Blows out the right side and all over the saddle bag. I thought it was from around the pushrods. Could it be from the heads? Sorry I missed the party but saw a lot of really fine SEs in the lot. The 06 Haze with the matching trailer was my favorite. Rode the Dragon with no tickets from the Tennessee Department of Revenue. Now my Honda buddies will be putting floor sweep under my ride. Oh well, time for that 10K anyway. :pepper:

If it's not blowing out the dipstick hole, it might be coming out the breather A/C, particularly if you were running high RPM's for a long period of time with a topped off oil sump.  Running 1/2 quart low will help this some, but high RPM's will cause it.

I'm running straight 50w in mine,  doesn't seem to make a huge difference.

Why, is your 08 leaking?

Trying to keep the oil pressure up in the motor when it starts to get hot, so went to the heavier oil.

mr_magoo,
If your 08 has low oil pressure, I would be taking it back to the dealer....there is a problem.
I have an 08 and the oil pressure is great.  Even at an idle here in Oklahoma where the daytime temps have been 95 - 100+ degrees.  The oil temp on my bike has been running about 225 degrees.  I am currently running Syn3, but will be switching to Amsoil on next service.

TcnBham you were right. The high heat and riding fourth gear caused the oil to saturate the air filter. New filter and a little cleaning fixed me up. Interesting thing, it now coughs and spits just like it did when new! I just imagine I got another new ride! HA! :pineapple:
