I installed the HogTunes a long time ago. Then later installed the Harmon Kardon 2006 Harley radio and the Hawg-Wired amplifier kit.
Thanks to HD-Dude and Paul at HawgWired I got a free set of their upgraded speakers when I did the amp install. It was HawgWired's way of saying thank you for showing the installation publicly. Anyway....
So I had the HogTunes and the HawgWired speakers at the same time. Swapped back and forth a couple of times just to see which might sound better. I don't have the greatest ear for that kind of sound quality so it was a very subjective test. In the end, however, my results seem to coincide with what HD-Dude and one other person I spoke with who had had both speaker sets seem to hear.
The HogTunes were a bit stronger down lot. The HawgWired were a bit better up high. All tolled, however, not a big difference between the two though. Both were such a significant improvement over the stock speakers (hell, anything would be) and they were so close to equal in performance with each other that you weren't going wrong either way.
That was until this evening......
This evening took the fairing off and installed HawgWired's new component speaker set. Real and far more than noticeable improvement over either of the prior options.
I rode the bike for about an hour before working on it specifically to listen to a CD with a few "challenging songs" playing back to back over and over again. Then rode the bike again after working on it listening to the same CD. Not only is it clearer and offering more volume everywhere and in every range; I simply heard stuff in the music that I didn't hear before the new speakers went in.
These things are more expensive than the HogTunes or the other HawgWired option. And if you've got an 06 bike with the 2ohm radio you'd really not want to use them without an amp in between the radio and the speakers. But they are at least worth considering. Sorry for adding to anyone's confusion.
