A COUPLE OF INTERESTING CVOs AT CLUB HOG IN KNOXVILLE
« on: August 27, 2007, 09:24:28 PM »

I saw this Smurf in the parking lot near the registration tent.  The Watermelon was in the ride in show.  This '07 and the '06 both appeared to have paint over the standard paint job.  It all appeared to be under the clear coat.  I'm going to post some pictures of both.  Can you put paint over the existing clear coat and then put on additional clear coat.  I'm just curious about how the paint process was done on the two examples I'm posting in this thread.

Here's another shot of the Smurf.  It appears that the flames were put on over the standard paint.

Here's the '06 Watermelon with some graphics and paint that appear to be over the standard paint job.

If you can shed some light on this painting process, I'd like to hear it!  Last shot of the Watermelon.

Wonder if they just did a light sanding job of the clear coat then applied new stuff and clear coated over it. :nixweiss: Either way those are some unique additions. :2vrolijk_21:

Nice pictures!  That Watermelon is over the top!

Process: Wet sand into the existing clear.  Apply airbrush effects and additional graphics.  Apply coats of clear with a light wet sand in between coats and Viola - Magic!

About how many coats of clear does it take to make the paint job look seamless?  Looking at these bikes I just could not see any line or distinction between the original paint and that added.  The paint was great on both.

As many as it takes.  Literally, you have to build up enough clear so you can wet sand it down flat. So that depends on what you've got underneath. Some of the graphics on the newer H-D's are decals and so you have to build up a bunch of coats to level off everything without cutting into the decals when you wet sand.

Hey if it was easy and cheap we'd all have perfect paint jobs now wouldn't we.

If the owners are members of the site, maybe they'll offer some insight on their bikes and the process.  I was really impressed with both.
