08 SE A/C
« on: August 28, 2007, 12:10:52 AM »

I am thinking of changing to a hi-flow A/C but will have to lose the stock A/C cover.  This stock cover is impressive with the Screaming Eagle and 110 on it.  do you think there will be other options soon as I really hate to lose this cover.

Welcome Ken

2 Things here, if you get a high flo, get the chrome backing plate. The stock cover will hold up to a 2  3/4 K & N filter. ZippersPerformance makes one.
More importantly, if you get a high flo filter, you will need to change the ECM. The electronic module cannot adjust to the change of increased air, and will make the bike even leaner than it is. There are no solutions today, but hopefully by year end.  If you fry the motor with more heat, whcih is what will happen, you will not be happy.   Dealers are not the best place for answers sometimes, if they want to sell stuff and risk your ride.  This is an ongoing dilemna, recently attributed to the EPA new rules.  Keep an eye on Thundermax and PowerCommander for 08 solutions.

Ken here is a link to the Roll Your Own a/c. This way you can keep the original cover.

You can us your stock cover with the 08 SE air cleaner kit you just need a 1/4 in spacer between the filter and the cover.  I put it on and it works great the cover doesn't stick out quite as far as stock.

Thanks Mr. Magoo!  Brought my '08 home last week with a fugly a/c cover to fit the SE A/C setup.  Hated it, but wanted it to be able to breath right.  I saw your response and used a metal washer between two rubber washers to isolate the vibration and try to prevent the cracking that some have talked about.  It works like a charm and my bike has the stock A/C look again.  :)

Ken,

Since adding the hi-perf A/C have you noticed an problems with heat? Is she running leaner now?

I've been holding off on such mods until the ECM problem is resolved. I have the same concerns Rhino expressed.

My UCSE3 is running no hotter then my 95" 99 Ultra did.  I have the SE A/C setup and that's the only change.  I planned on having the dealer re-tune it on the Dyno after break in, but it's not running hot enough to worry me at this point.  Road stop and go for a 5 mile parade this past week so it's had a variety of riding conditions.

I am aware of the heat issues the 96 & 110 motors have.  I fried my thighs on a rental 96" Ultra (2nd degree burns).  The heat on this is not even remotely close.  Guess I'm just lucky. So far. :-X

J-Carr,
Do you have the digital dipstick?  If so, what temp are you averaging?

I bought the $100 dipstick and am averaging around 225 degrees here in Oklahoma with temps in the upper 90's to low 100's.

Sorry, I do not have the digital oil dipstick.  I'm being purely subjective in my comment on the temp.  However, I did have it in my 99 and it ran at about 225 and the heat coming off the motor is very close.

J-Carr,  could it be those Harley Davidson's Heat Deflectors that you have installed on your bike that is making the different?  I have some RJS Originals heat deflectors on order and can't wait until they get here.  My bike is hotter than h#ll in stop and go traffic.  But, this is Houston and I see that you are a bit north of here which helps.

Hay Hafbad,

The heat deflectors make a difference on what you feel right at your legs/groin area, which is VERY nice.  Well worth the money.  However, you can still feel around them to see what the heat is like and this bike is not running any hotter then my 95" 99.  Much cooler then the 96" 07 I rented in Vegas.  Just lucky I guess!  Good luck with yours when they come in.  I'm sure you'll like them.

J'Carr, you may have the answer to the hot running 110's.  The only change that you have made is the SE A/C and you do not have the problems others are having, including myself.  I think that I'm going to all the SE A/C, although my mechanic suggested that I wait until the SERT become available.  What did they tell you about installing the SE A/C?  They did not tell you that it would run leaner and increase the heat?  The only mods I have made is the slip-on's and I can not tell a different in the heat.  :nixweiss:

Ok, on the 07 & 08 bikes, doesn't the ECM adjust it's self if you change something (A/C or exhaust)??  Admittedly, they should still run lean, as they should adjust back to the pre-set "EPA desired" air/fuel ratio --- am I right about this??? :nixweiss:

I have changed my exhaust (V&H Big Shot duals) and added the SE A/C backplate.  My bike runs great and COOL (around 220 degrees) >> doesn't pop or backfire at all.  I know it will run better when I add a PC and get it dyno tuned, but not bad for now.

You're correct as far as I know.  My understanding is that the ECM on the closed loop bikes will adjust itself.  So I assumed the mapping had been done on mine from the factory to be cooler then the previous 110s.  Then I read where som of the other '08s where still hot so I'm guessing I'm just lucky.  If it helps mine was 7/20/08 for a manufacture date.

As far as telling me about it running hotter, I know the dealer quite well and they know me.  They're aware I know about the heat issues with these motors and we've had a lot of discussion about it.  The original plan was I'd run it through break in and then have it remapped to run cooler, even if it hurt performance and mileage.  I'm not looking to fly and it has plenty of power for me so I wasn't worried.  I knew between remapping and the heat management download I could get it cool enough to not be an issue.  Then I picked it up and voila!  No heat issue. :huepfenjump3:

I'm just waiting to hit 5000-10000 to see if the head gasket issue pops up since it has seemed to be mostly on bikes that have run extermemly hot.
