Problem with 2001 SERG going dead
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:41:12 AM »

My 01 SERG is having some sort of electrical issue.  On 2 separate occasions while riding the bike it will just go dead and after coasting to the side of the road you can restart the bike but it will keep going dead on you.  The longer you let the bike sit before restarting it the farther you can ride before the problem occurs.  The last time this happended the siren would go off and you would have to locate the key fob and disarm it.  On both occasions I had the bike taken to my local Harley Shop but they were unable to get the same problem to occur while there.  The last time they rode the bike 52 miles without any problem.  The main circuit breaker was involved in a recall and was replaced.  I have an extended warranty on the bike but until the component that is causing the problem actually fails it is hard to find the issue and correct it.  I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what the issue might be?
Thanks.

Just because the breaker has been replaced once doesn't mean I'd assume it couldn't be the fault.  They're cheap and easy.  I'd start by groping/fondling every significant electrical connector/connection I could get my hands on and swapping the breaker again.

Vulcher,

This thread offered by Scooter will be of interest to you.  I can understand the frustration with the dealership not getting the problem to reoccur, but we sure know it's occuring.

I would check a few things.
The most obvious would be the connections on the battery.
I also would look into replacing the batteries on the alarm system.  Not the fob batteries.  but the batteries on the actual system itself.
Also, you may want to look at the plug that goes on into the keyswitch.  It's possible that it's working loose.

good luck,

The alarm will not kill a running bike.  I would check the connectors at the breaker.  What actually happened to many bikes I saw at my friends shop is that one of the connectors that go to the breaker were crimped badly from the factpry and overheated.  The breaker tripped from physical heat, not an electrical problem.  Every time the terminal was replaced in this situation, the problem was resolved.

Check the main overlay harness for broken wires, specifially in the area where it runs along the frame infront of the tank, before the fairing. There have been several bikes with intermittant electrical problems all from broken wires in this area. Mine was a broken VSS wire that the dealer could not find. I took my bike to an indy, and they found the break. Another bike had a broken cruise control wire.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Several years back there was a problem with the BAS (Bank Angle Sensor) shutting down bikes as you describe. IIRC, there was a recall to change the BAS mounting bracket that supposedly cured the problem.

Good luck.

With mine it was the heat sensor going bad with no message in the computer. The mechanic was so frustrated he straped the diagnostic gadget on and rode the bike until it quit and still no message. That should have been a recall but the company quietly replaced them with upgrades when needed.  Doc

Another thing came to mind. About five or six years ago my '01 just died and would not start. It was towed to the dealer and they determined the ECM to be bad. It was replaced under extended EPA warranty. If it is your ECM, perhaps this is the opportunity to upgrade to the Zippers ECM and Throttle Body and convert your bike to Zippers Delphi.

Keep us posted to what you find out.

No offense to anyone but I would park my SERG in the back yard and let my dog use it as a hydrant to piss on before I would put any Zippers part on it.

Yours may be fine for now but my point is that based on the chitty customer service, followup and the way they have treated friends of mine I have no use for that company.
And I plan to tell that to everyone that ever ask what I think of them.

Besides, I thought your was stock!
