2008 Paint Problems
« on: September 02, 2007, 03:31:20 PM »

 >:( Here we go again!!!  I looked at a 2008 SE Ultra Classic today in the White & Silver color.  The inner fairing did not match the outer fairing and the saddle bag lids did not match the saddle bags.  It was an obvious color mismatch.  The bag lids and inner fairing were lighter than the rest.  Brought it to the dealers attention, he agreed as well as several service techs.  They said they would show it to the regional HD Rep.  Probably will sell the bike that way!  >:(

Those of you who have 2008s on order check your PAINT!!!  Looks like 2006 all over again!!!

Wonderful!  35K+ fees and license, first it's the rear head gasket, which only requires about $1500 more for pipes and a tune, now defective paint?  ::)

Is the love affair and brand loyalty with these motorcycles so overpowering that it blinds our better judgment?    :-*

deucedog,

That is exactly what the MoCo is counting on.  BTW, I can think of many other old line "American" companies who took advantage of customer loyalty the same way.  Many no longer exist, and others are currently fighting for survival.  The American public can be fickle, ignorant, self-absorbed, etc., but even the dumbest yokel will eventually get tired of grabbing his ankles every time a greedy corporation snaps the fingers.  It's pretty bad when you can't rely on your new $35k bike and have to buy a second machine for when the high priced one is sitting in the shop.  I wonder how well that will go over when the economy goes in the tank and the folks who currently have more money than good sense stop throwing it at the MoCo. :nixweiss:

History is bound to repeat itself.  You can't keep putting out an inferior product and superior prices forever.  Someday things will change.

I have paint issues on the red & silver.  Mainly prints in the paint and orange peel, color is a great match on all parts.

Glad to see things are back to normal now that they're using Calibre again.

When different parts don't match, tell people you have a 3 or 4 color scheme.  When life gives you a lemon, just call it an HD and enjoy it.

Never stopped using Calibre.

That's interesting. I was told they went away from them in '07 because of all the problems they had in '06. Maybe 07 was just a good year.

It was in some Harley literature Chuck.  Talking about the "new specialty painter" for 07.  A member here was overseas and looking for an 05 part that Harley was telling him would be months and months away.  I called Calibre directly trying to score one.  In casual conversation when asked about how they were doing with the then new 07 colors the lady on the phone said "oh, we're not paint those this year."

Who knows, but it was in print that 07 outside paint was moving.  Was also in print that 08 was at Calibre again.  06 was such a disaster one can understand making a move.  07 was an improvement.  Harley probably got it cheaper at the initial vendor and moved back anyway.

It's pretty sad with the paint equipment they have these days. Sadly the MOCO is a least consistant (bad).
My brotherinlaw used to work in the GoldWing plant in the paint department and they painted a lot of stuff over (before the bike left the plant).  He said once something was painted more than once, it was scraped.  They couldn't take a chance and have the bike wrecked and the owner finding several colors of paint possibly exposed.

Geeeessss, I sure hope this isn't the reason my husband's White and Silver SE hasn't arrived yet. Was to ship on 8/30 and we haven't heard anything on it yet. He had problems with paint issues on his SE Road King back in 05. Dealer ordered different parts for that bike at least 8 time and it still was never a real good match. He will be sick if he has to go through all this again and with at $35,000 bike to boot. Our dealer is also a good friend, he told us back in 2005 that the plastic parts of the bike like the saddlebags, lids and side covers and ferrin's on the E-Glides are painted in a different part of the plant than the metal parts are. How in the heck do they expect things to be a perfect match when they do things like that. Or at least they should have several people going over the bikes under very good lighting to make sure they match before they leave the plant. Quality Control is what is needed most at the CVO plant. I have the 08 Ultra White and Silver and someone painted it perfectly. I have no paint issues with this bike. I did receive a nice paint ding on my front fender but that comes from riding it!! 8)
