You have to consider new cover to replace the crappy one, let's see - true duals, SEAC, PCIII USB, Garmin GPS to replace crappy stock one, IDS, 50 quarts of fluids trying to get something that pleased the mill, Corbin seat, damn I am stopping here, I am getting depressed.

Removed the balance weights from my wheels the other week and installed the ceramic beads from http://www.innovativebalancing.com/motorcycle.htm too. I'm impressed!  Wheel balance seems perfect, AND it's got rid of the nasty weights from my chrome wheels too - corrosion would be a certainty to start there...

Looks like a great idea -- how long do they last?  Do the beads abrade against each other and eventually turn to dust?

No quoted lifetime, Dave - and they say you can re-use them when you fit a new tyre.  They are v. hard, v. smooth, v. heavy, and I doubt they'd break down.

My local dealer is offering 20% off on the IDS and $100 off on Installation next month. I am going to do it. They also told me that the IDS was first installed on the VRod and is still used on the VRod today. I did not know that.

I've got all my adds on Excel spreadsheet....Diva updated things a month or so ago.  Right at 50K and I haven't even started on motor work yet...and NONE of that is labor, as I did 99% of the mods myself!!  That's just on the Ultra, not counting the Vrod...

WTF...it's only money, and I'll make some more.

Actually, what H-D calls the IDS is the same thing we called a "cush drive" back in ancient times.  Every Japanese bike I ever owned had this type of rubber damper in the rear wheel, to absorb powertrain pulses and provide a small measure of protection to the mechanical bits and pieces.  I'm not certain how far back the system goes, but it wasn't new back in the 1950's.  The compensator sprocket on a Harley crankshaft has the same purpose, with a slightly less refined result.

The "cush drive" was part of the original design of the V-Rod (powertrain designed by Porsche, utilizing modern ideas and methods).  It would appear that someone at H-D had a sudden rush of blood to the brain and somehow realized that adding the "cush drive" sprocket system to the regular H-D compensator system just might reduce the noise and harshness enough to get folks to stop bitching about the problems.  It's a shame that they didn't do this as a no cost customer satisfaction upgrade, rather than stick the '07 folks with paying for the fix themselves.

"Cush drive" I was thinking that it wasn't anything new. I had seen what I called cush drive for 30 years on the
Jap bikes. New to Harley, YES, new to the rest of the modern world, NOPE. Good post Jerry!

Yup, fitted it to mine on Sunday! 

(haven't ridden with it on yet though - the rain started just as I finished....)  Nice easy job, wouldn't dream of paying to have it fitted!  If you are buying the kit though, get the dealer to press the bearing in before you take it home! (unless you have a press, that is!)

OK, did two or three hundred miles on my bike over the weekend - first rides with the IDS fitted.  My conclusion?  It's great!  Significant reduction in vibration through the footboards, and if you imagine the jerks as the drivetrain takes up and lets off the drive on those slow winding little roads as you repeatedly open and close the throttle - the jerks are gone. It's very smooth like that.  You can ride at lower revs too, if you want, without feeling you are lugging the motor. Has it removed the whine in 5th?  I don't know. Mine never whined much in any case, but there's no way you can hear the whine above the exhaust anyway!

Overall though?  Great modification!
