Detonation
« on: February 16, 2005, 12:27:58 PM »

I have a stone stock FLHTCSE2, and am having a lot of detonation when the bike is warmed up. I have a buddy that has a stock '04 FLHTCSE and I can't make that bike detonate at any rpm. Mine will detonate at any rpm under load. I took the bike in to the shop today to see if they can figure this out. Is it possible that the ion sensing system is not working properly or is my bike mapped wrong, ( it would have to be that way from the factory because I haven't touched it)?
 By the way I run 93 octane and have tried gas from several different stations but I still get the problem. I actually had it detonate at 80 pulling a hill on the interstate on 2/14.  Any thoughts?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Mobe,
It is possible that the ion sensor is malfunctioning. Generally a check engine light or notification appears either by way of idiot light or by reading out the codes.  It is also possible that the ECM is the wrong one as well.  I think that same problem existed on some of the 02 and 03 SERKs.  The wrong or inadequate ECM was installed from the factory.  I am assuming that your timing is on spec and that you have no manifold (exhaust / intake) leaks.

MFG;
 As far as I know there is no intake or exhaust leaks. I do however have a rear rocker box leaking oil, (they are going to repair this also). But I don't think it's a venting issue, at least I hope not.

mobe,
I think at this point in time we should learn what they have found and or have not found through their tests.  They can tell you everything that they did and did not do, then we will have a better handle on where to go or what's next if the problem is not determined and resolved.

I did a post about this over on the tech talk forum and Hippo stated that he had a similar problem on an 01 flhtcui and that it turned out to be a problem with insufficient clamping force on the compensator nut. I don't think that this is my problem but I'll wait to hear back from the shop and see.

If you are getting a lot of detonation, get it fixed quick. Your valves/pistons/etc are going to get burned up and its going to be big bucks! What mods have you done to your bike? There are many possible causes of detonation that higher octane might not help.

Well i would ensure you do not have a intake leak, that does not mean only the seals. We see many of the map sensors seals leak also. If you are sure that is not the cause, what is the AFR?? The fuel octane you have sounds great( we only have 91) so that is a big help with todays poor fuel. Valve seal leakage will deposit enough oil on the pistons to create hot spots ,  Take a peek at the plug what do they look like?? And I can tell you that I have seen way too many issues with "so called high performance plugs" a good set of auto lite plugs run better than anything else we have tested.   Let us know what you find??

GMR, what autolite plugs do you use for the 110?

4164. set gap to .035. We have seen some very weird things with tuning and drivablity with split fire  triple plated, frozen , depleted what evers.  I have tested plugs with claims ( that are BS) and always get a good laugh.  AS well your stock wires are more than up to the task, in fact we tested a set of high volt wires and it created a tq dip that could not be tuned out. WE pull them wires and gained 2/2 across the board, and the dip was a 5 lb tq dip was gone. The wire tested out fine, and we gave them back to the owner and did not even charge him for a set of take of stock wires. What can you do the guy was worked over once with frozen plugs and plug wires that are a 1/2 inch thick.

I hope you get this problem sorted soon.  It must be quite worrying.  Have you taken it to the dealership for them to take a look
