Harley heat fix
« on: September 06, 2007, 08:04:17 PM »

Has anyone tried this new free download offered by harley? It is supposed to shut down the rear cylinder in some traffic situations to help the cooling issues.

I've been thinking about it. Might keep the rear head from leaking after I get the new gasket on. Something to think about for sure. The download is free to boot.

I believe this will only shut down the rear cylinder during overheat and while the bike is at a dead idle. As soon as you move off idle, it will cease to do anything. I can't see how that will even begin to help the bike in traffic. How much time to you spend at a dead stop? Probably not much. JMO

It's just a shame that you spend over $30K on a bike and then have a need for a "heat fix" at all.  It is interesting that the MOCO is publishing info on how to reduce heat.  It sounds like they know that there are "heat" problems.

I asked the SM at the Dealership I use and he said they had done only one.  Apparently not to much interest.

I agree, and we're all guilty as charged, because we keep paying the 30K+ and MoCo keeps on delivering 'em, heat problems and all.  When we're all under the ether of the "heritage" and "cool looks" of the Harley Davidson bikes, we simply dismiss the problems by shelling out more money at an already very expensive motorcycles, i.e. pipes, SERTS, PC's, fans, dynos, "true" duals, and the list goes on... :nixweiss:

I guess it is one of those love/hate relationships.  ::)

the download to interrupt spark on the new bikes at idle works well with the plastic thigh protectors the dealer recommends. :ROFLOL: :ROFLOL: :ROFLOL: :behead2: :hanged:

You mean you don't want those plastic heat shields melted to your arse? The MOCO wont be happy to hear that!

I think the fix for the heat issue is to get a 12" taller seat.  You can rest your feet on the tank.
-You may need to add an automatic kickstand system for stops, and you'll need to get a much taller windshield of course.  -Be sure to check tunnel heights though!
You'll be safer on the road because you will be able to look over most SUVs!!
-Hey maybe I could get a patent on this idea with the MoCo!  -Should be worth Millions $$$$$$$!.
Another benefit is you could enjoy the cool red glow of you pipes during night riding!  I'm sure I'm onto something here.    ::)  -Retail-PLUS

This came out last year in the new 07 features document.  Back then we never thought much about excessive heat.  :(

Maybe the delay in getting the '08s out has a reason.  People in the snow belt won't be able to ride them 'til spring, by then we'll have forgotten about these issues.  Heat won't be an issue because we'll need snowmobile suits to ride.  Oil leaks won't happen because we'll only get a few miles on our bikes.
-Sure we'll face all this crap next summer, by that time our warranties will be about 1/3 over.  They'll only have to replace about one set of gaskets before our warranties are up.  The MoCo won't have to issue a permanent fix.  - :confused5: doesn't this seem reasonable?   :-\
-Reminds me of the guy that fell off the empire state building.  He was asked- after dropping about 80 floors- how he was doing.  "So far so good!" he said.
