Is it worth Having an Extended Warranty ???
« on: September 13, 2007, 09:15:45 PM »

Extended Warranty....

Reading all those threads about 103 engine problems, etc...

My question is...Does everyone get one when buying there new bike?

How much does it cost, Is it negotiable?  How long of an extended warranty does one usually get?  Mileage and years?

Thanks...

Did you mean problems w/the 110 motors??

Not everyone gets extended warranties. I think those that are intended major mods, or can do a lot of their wrenching don't get them.

They are negotiable even though some dealers will tell you they are not. I would try the dealers that offer 20% discount first to get prices. The extended warranty's are by years w/unlimited mileage. If I remember correctly you can get them all the way up to seven years. If you are interested in them there is a certain time period/mileage after you get a new bike that there is one price, and getting after that time expires the price will increase slightly.

Copper/Black,

In the past I have always counseled against service contracts, since in the majority of cases the only folks who make out on them are the folks selling them (very high profit, with a chunk going to the salesman, another chunk to the dealer, and another to H-D).  You'll find that consumer organizations also advise against them in most cases.  However, with the major issues that have befallen our friends with the '07 and '08 models, I have to modify that advice.  I now highly recommend a contract on the '07 and '08 models.

Since I never buy a service contract, I haven't really researched this enough to be able to give you details.  I will say that in the auto business you aren't limited to the contracts sold by the car manufacturer; there are plenty of other companies out there.  Most likely you will be able to find the same thing in the motorcycle market.  The reason I mention this is for those like me who find giving H-D additional profits to repair their poor design and poor quality extremely distasteful.

Typically the contracts offered by H-D can be purchased in different lengths of time, anywhere from 1 year to 5 years.  You will notice that H-D calls that 3 years to 7 years, since they include the first two years of standard warranty in the time frame.  The cost varies by model and time frame, and as fired00d mentioned it is negotiable, no matter what your dealer may tell you.  Harley won't negotiate their price, but the dealer gets a nice markup and that part is negotiable.  If you go with an independent company, you can try with them also.  The worst that can happen is they say no.

I usually don't buy & advise against extended warranties, but after all the stuff I read on the 07 110's, when I bought my 08 is spent the $$ on the 5 year extended warranty (seven year total now).  I really hope I don't need it, but if I do it may have been the best $$ I have spent lately.  I guess it is a relatively inexpensive way to have peace of mind for as long as I will own the bike.

I just purchased an extended contract for my 08' CVO Road King. The total coverage in years is now 5.

I did the same with my 05' CVO FatBoy.

I wouldn't have it any other way. Now, I am not saying I voided my own service agreement by upgrading, modifying and making a monster out of my SE FatBoy (yeah, I did) but still, would not have it any other way.

It's an investment, transfers and remains a great point of sale if you choose to sell your CVO Harley (heaven for bid).

If you have a good indie I would say no.  You already gave HD a pile of money and it is going to take even more to get it running and handling right.   :freak:

I did not extend my W, even if I have a major issue, I will go out of pocket to either fix it myself or have the indie shop do it.  That gives me the opportunity to do it right.  How repeat head gaskets leakers do have on this site?   :nixweiss:

jmho, do what feels right to you.

With all the issues with the motors it would be a wise investment.

Copper/Black CVO, do you have your SERK Annie yet?  If not, has the ship date been pushed out a couple times?

I have one on order and was told November right up front.  We found out last week that they now have an order number but still no VIN and the tentative ship date is November 7th.

I'm also toying with the idea of the extended warranty.

I wish the previous owner of my current bike would have purchased the extended warranty.  If they had I'd be having MoCo rebuild the rod and crank bearings instead of doing it myself.  Oh well, I guess it is a '76 and the warranty would have had to been VERY extended.

All kidding aside, I think on an new '08 SERK having the extra years will be a big relief if something happens that they wouldn't cover otherwise.

What's the going price for the extended warranty on a new SERK?  I've read that this price is not written in stone and some dealers will negotiate that figure.  If you buy an extended warranty from a dealer, say in Chicago and you live in St. Louis, would the St. Louis dealer be obligated to do the repairs?

Good luck with your new bike.

My feeling is that it used to be a great deal for the MOCO , but i bet they are wishing they hadn't been offering it on the 07/08's.  ;D

Dan,

When I place the order in Aug, the date was Mid-Sept.... ;D

So when Sept came I call the dealership and they pushed the date back to Mid-Oct.   >:( Thats where I am...

I sure the warranty is a MUST have...But I think as I understand from reading some prior answers to warranties questions, We do not have to buy them at the same date when purchasing the bike.

We have some time to decide or at least save some more $$$ to go toward the cause...Need to confirm this with the dealership....

I not sure about if you can buy the extended warranty at any dealership of your choice  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:  But it only make sense that you could and all the other dealership would then need to Honor it....

Just my thoughts...

These extended warranty's are most likely underwritten by some sort of insurance company.  HD pays a premium for each bike covered.  The rest is profit.
However I'm sure the premiums will be increased when the insurance notices the claims being made.  This increased activity won't hit until after the factory warranty expires.

Just my thoughts...

Copper/Black CVO, I placed my order the day after the MoCo updated their website for the '08s.  I think that was around July 9th or 10th.

My dealer here in St. Louis, Doc's Harley Davidson, is not the largest dealership in the nation, but are at least I believe in the top ten.  They were ranked for '06/07 as the #1 dealership for customer satisfaction/service/experience of the nations 680 dealerships.

That being said, I felt that I stood a great chance of getting my Annie edition sooner than say some other local dealership or even out of state.  But my date has always been November sometime.

I already have V&H Dresser Duals, V&H Slip-on Ovals, rear docking kit, TourPak mounting kit and the Reptile '08 SE TourPak just sitting here waiting for my bike.

I've already seen one SERK come and go through the dealership and I think they've had another already as well.  My salesman called me when it came in and I took pictures of it, sat on it and started it up.  What a temptation to just say "I want it"...  I had the opportunity to buy it early on but when I said I'd wait, someone else put some down on it and they're happily riding this weekend and I'm just getting pissed off.  They have a SEUC, I call it red and silver, but I think it's crimson or something like that.  They sold me mine at MSRP but they have $36,900 on the SEUC, but would probably be willing to deal just a bit on it.

I really don't want to just say the hell with it and get another color '08 SERK just for the sake of getting one sooner.  I would really be pissed if they push them out further yet.

I'm in a different position than most others here, in that all I have to ride is a '76 FLH shovelhead.  Mind you it's probably one of the nicest looking around as you can see if you go to me picture trail albums and take a peek, but right now I've got to get out in the garage and finish pulling out the motor so I can send the crank assembly out to Truett/Osborn in Kansas.  It developed a rattle that I eventually pinned to the lower rod bearings; a very long story....

So I can't just say screw it, I'll just keep my '05 or '06 and wait for the issues on the 110" to be resolved, unless I want to beat myself up every time we ride the FLH for more than a 100 miles at a sitting.  I have to start somewhere and the '08 SERK Annie edition is my starting point.

Right now it's in the mid '70s here in St. Louis with very little wind and VERY sunny.  You couldn't ask for a nicer weekend to ride and I'm just tearing down my only ride, what a bummer...

Keep us updated on your ship schedule.

Sorry for the rambling guys.
