Would also add I've ridden behind bikes with these kinds of ends -- downward exhaust blast hitting the pavement.  Could see it puffing up grit at slow speeds and at stoplights, almost like a leaf blower.  It also gave the exhaust note a "fffttttt""ffftttt" as it hit the pavement.

Great description.  That's it exactly.  It's amazing how the direction of the exhaust can chage the sound.
