Zumo 550 or 2820? Help!
« on: September 17, 2007, 04:06:26 PM »

After looking carefully this past weekend at the GPS units in Hot Springs, it has become very apparent I need to throw my H-D Quest 2 in the garbage. I have been reluctant to do this because of the hole in the inner fairing that would be left and I can't think of anything to cover it up. I've decided to leave the mount on the fairing and just purchase another unit and use a handlebar mount, stereo GPS's.
My question is Zumo 550 or Street Pilot 2820, I looked carefully at both and I'm stuck in the middle. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also I do have the Nolan N-com Bluetooth in my helmet but it seems both are equally compatible so I guess that is not a determining factor.

Thanks

Mark, when my old 2620 died recently I replaced it with the 2820 because it would fit my preexisting mounting hardware.  The basic capabilities of the Zumo and the 2820 were similar enough that no other factor would have dramatically pushed one way or the other.

Both actually seem very competent.  There are a couple of quirks in things the Zumo will not display (some city/town name data and other small things) that the 2820 does better (to my tastes).  But it really does some to be nothing dramatic between the two.  Have also had both connected to my Nolan helmet and have seen them work fine.  If the short term off bike portability of the Zumo doesn't impact the choice for you the rest of the differences are very very small.

Mark,
I can only speak for the Zumo as it's my first GPS. From what I've learned and experienced is that the Zumo was designed for motorcyclist, and the functions are easy to use with and w/o gloves on. If I remember correctly the specs were pretty much the same when I was comparing the two. If you've seen them both then it's probably going to come down to personal preference. :nixweiss: Either one you decide to get there will be plenty of help here to get you used to either unit. Since you are already using one you are ahead of the learning curve then I was.

Thanks guys, that confirms my thinking after researching on Garmins' site. Well onward toward Ebay, best price I've found online so far is $609.

Mark,
When I was pricing the Zumo I found the best price at BizRate with PC Nation offering the best price. Can't remember the exact price I paid for it at the moment and I'm not at my desk to look it up. I couldn't find anything on eBay anywhere near the price that I found from Bizrate, and that price you mentioned of $609 is a lot cheaper then what I remember paying for the Zumo.

Mark, you taking any action on how long you'll let the fairing mount bug you before the inner gets replaced or repaired and repainted?

My vote is the Zumo 550. I have been using it for the past year and it is amazing. I have been thru torrential rainstorms and triple digit temps and never missed a beat. I loaded 6240 miles of routes for a 15 day trip out West this year and drove door to door thru parts of the world that I couldn't even beleive that would be on a map. The size of the screen is awesome and the 3D is rock solid correct. One small feature that I like is that it has a battery and will give you the option of keeping it powered up when you kill power to fuel. This is better than waiting for it to completely boot back up after you power back up.

Mark, maybe come winter you can use it as a Christmas tree mount?  Then in February little hearts and pink stuff.  Then an Easter Bunny!

Lots of uses ahead for that wonderful little part  :drink: .

Don, I suggest you put up a poll and we can vote on the timeframe until MJZ does something about that fairing mount.  I'll cast the first vote - he'll move on it before year end.

Jerry, since MJ started the thread he'd have to be poll-meister.  Either that or a mod.  I'd be willing to entertain side bets that the BUH (big ugly hole) won't survive until spring though. :drink:

Mark,
Congrats. If you have any questions on mounting/using it let me know. Not an expert, but have learned a lot since I've had mine.

I've Had my Zumo since early April. Rode up through Canada to Jasper and back to Southern Idaho, I love this thing. I used the POI loader and uploaded HD dealerships. works awsome.

Hope your new one works as well as mine has.
