Friday afternoon, we pulled out about 2:30 and the weather looked pretty blue, but we pressed on as we took the NC Scenic highway off of the beaten path. About 30 minutes into our ride, the skies cleared and the sun was shining brightly. What a great day for a ride! Well, that lasted about 20 minutes and then the skies opened up and poured buckets of water on us as we rode through Cleveland, NC. We pulled in for gas at Mocksville and spoke with some other bikers that had just came from the direction we were heading and told us that they had just ridden through some of the nastiest weather that they had ever ridden in during their last 30 years of riding. Not what the wives wanted to hear, but hey, we're no quitters! We pressed on and the rain would ease a bit and then release it's fury on us time after time until finally it subsided to a light but steady rain. Great thing about back roads, is that when it really rains, there's just not much traffic. Lot's of standing water, but not much traffic. As we approached the best part of Friday's ride, the rain let up to a fine mist. Much better as we made our way up Lamsburg Road (this is a great 10 mile stretch just above the Blue Ridge Parkway in Southern Virginia). The switchbacks and twisties were just great. This is just about the best 10 mile stretch of paved road I have ever found. We must have poked up through the clouds at least twice and seen our own tail lights at least a dozen times or so with the switchbacks. The only drawback came when the pavement ended and the gravel began! The GPS showed only 1.5 miles of road to our next turn and that we were only 10 minutes from the hotel for the night. I had no problems with turning around and doing that stretch of road again, but something about the wives being cold and wet with glaring eyes and that stern cold tone saying, "Get us to the hotel" that any smart man cannot ignore! We pressed on. Not bad, but it will be amazing when they complete the pavement that last stretch of 1.5 miles.
Saturday morning, the weather looking a bit gloomy, we packed up the bikes and prepared to head out.
