Quick NC Mountains Trip
« on: September 18, 2007, 04:01:35 PM »

I got a call from my good friend Lewis on Wednesday evening and he informed me that he was in town on leave and really needed to do ride.  His wife was off work on Friday afternoon leaving a long weekend for riding.  Being the good friend that I am, I immediately responded with absolutely, let's ride.  The women were looking for a ride to Charleston, SC for the weekend, but we quickly informed them that the weather wasn't looking too good for Charleston, but the mountains looked good for the weekend.  I immediately opened up Map Source on the PC and started plotting out a course through the mountains.  Our ride would take us from Charlotte, NC to Hillsville, VA on Friday, down the Blue Ridge Parkway on Saturday to Cherokee and then Fairview, Franklin, Cashiers, Hendersonville, Lake Lure and back to Charlotte on Sunday.

See pdf file of route taken.

Friday afternoon, we pulled out about 2:30 and the weather looked pretty blue, but we pressed on as we took the NC Scenic highway off of the beaten path.  About 30 minutes into our ride, the skies cleared and the sun was shining brightly.  What a great day for a ride!  Well, that lasted about 20 minutes and then the skies opened up and poured buckets of water on us as we rode through Cleveland, NC.  We pulled in for gas at Mocksville and spoke with some other bikers that had just came from the direction we were heading and told us that they had just ridden through some of the nastiest weather that they had ever ridden in during their last 30 years of riding.  Not what the wives wanted to hear, but hey, we're no quitters!  We pressed on and the rain would ease a bit and then release it's fury on us time after time until finally it subsided to a light but steady rain.  Great thing about back roads, is that when it really rains, there's just not much traffic.  Lot's of standing water, but not much traffic.  As we approached the best part of Friday's ride, the rain let up to a fine mist.  Much better as we made our way up Lamsburg Road (this is a great 10 mile stretch just above the Blue Ridge Parkway in Southern Virginia).  The switchbacks and twisties were just great.  This is just about the best 10 mile stretch of paved road I have ever found.  We must have poked up through the clouds at least twice and seen our own tail lights at least a dozen times or so with the switchbacks.  The only drawback came when the pavement ended and the gravel began!  The GPS showed only 1.5 miles of road to our next turn and that we were only 10 minutes from the hotel for the night.  I had no problems with turning around and doing that stretch of road again, but something about the wives being cold and wet with glaring eyes and that stern cold tone saying, "Get us to the hotel" that any smart man cannot ignore!  We pressed on.  Not bad, but it will be amazing when they complete the pavement that last stretch of 1.5 miles.

Saturday morning, the weather looking a bit gloomy, we packed up the bikes and prepared to head out.

We headed down route 221 to Route 89 and then onto the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We hadn't been on the Parkway more than 15 minutes and the skies cleared to what would be a beautiful day of riding without exception.
A few pictures along the Parkway.

A stop for lunch in Linville Falls at Louise's Famous Restaurant.  Nice people and great food.  If you're really hungry, try their delicious meatloaf!

On down the Parkway.  Just too many incredible views today.  The weather was perfect.

A shot of Ms. Bear.

A shot of the Heritage.  Don't mind the road grime from Fiday's rain event!

A shot of Ms Bear (Martha) taking in the breath taking scenery at one of the last stops along the Parkway just above Cherokee.

We checked into the hotel in Cherokee and found that some computer glitch on the reservations computer had charged us with 5 rooms!  I like my space, but please!  The guy at the desk was really nice about it and quickly removed the 3 extra rooms from my Amex and asked us to remove the No Vacancy sign from the window.  The rooms were booked before we could even get completed checking in.  The Holiday Inn Express is right across the street from Harrah's Casino, so we headed over to the Hotel/Casino to look for some dinner.  As it was now about 9:15 PM, the guy at the front desk told us it was probably our only option.  We made our way to the Sycamore Restaurant in the Casino Hotel and what a great surprise that was.  The food was excellent as was the service.  If you find yourself looking for great steaks and seafood in Cherokee, we highly recommend the Sycamore.  Made our way through the Casino without loosing any of our money (don't ask how, I really don't know!)

Had a fine breakfast at the hotel before heading out on Sunday morning.  Made our way down Route 28 to Franklin before picking up Route 64 all the way to Lake Lure.  Great roads as many of you know.

Stopped at Toxaway Falls Tavern for a great lunch.  These folks are very biker friendly and have great food. Martha said it was the best Eggplant Parmesan she had ever had and Lewis loved the fried chicken.

A shot of Lewis and Kristina in front of the falls.

We made it back to Charlotte around 7:00 PM after a great 700 miles on the bikes.  Martha insists on longer trips that we take the softail and leave the V-Rod in the garage!  My fault for putting the Mustang Seat on the bike.  Just wait till I get her on the back of a Touring CVO bike!  Lewis is presently looking for a SERK.  He has missed his ever since he gave it up back in 2004.  Welcome back Lewis!

A great trip with friends on two wheels!  Just doesn't get much better!

Thanks all.  Looking forward to next month in Maggie Valley!
