Who Makes The H-D 6 Speeds??
« on: September 19, 2007, 04:29:43 PM »

I just got off the telephone with Chicago H D, I was trying to order a 6 speed and get the 20% off. No such luck, they only discount the 6 speeds $250 because they come from an outside manufacturer and there is very little mark-up. I am now wondering if that manufacturer also labels that transmission for any other companies or possibly under their own name.
I would guess probably tied to an exclusive deal with only MoCo but with the cost right at 3K, it is worth asking. :nixweiss:

Mark,

My dealer gave me dealer cost plus 10 percent for Michelle's 6 speed.   The pricing turned out to be 2299.90 less 344.98 for the discount.   That price included the hydralulic 6 speed side cover you need.

33102-03a  Gear Set
38753-04a  Side Cover for Hydraulic

They could not give me my normal 15 percent discount on the transmission because that would be below dealer cost for them.

Interesting, they gave me part numbers 33136-04 ($2,549.) and 38753-04A ($239.), could that be due to the 05 silver and chrome case?

Mark,

33102-03a list was 1699.96   Gear Set Only
38753-04a list was 254.96     Hydraulic Cover

Your part numbers broke down as the following from Chicago Harley.

FLHT COMPLETE TRANSMISSION, SILVER
Fits '02-'06 Touring Models.
Requires separate purchase of appropriate 6-speed side cover release kit.

Actual price is $2,549.95. This item is not eligible for the 20% discount.

I did not see a need to buy the case as well as the gear set so I was able to save some money doing it that way.
Do you have a reason why you need a new Transmission?  If you don't you can save some money.

Harry, a couple of reasons I was thinking of going with the new case. 1, I had heard the existing case would take some modification and the wrench time at 85 bucks an hour would eat that up quickly and 2, I could put the old one on ebay and sell complete. :nixweiss: Keep in mind I know nothing mechanical and am just feeling my way in the dark.
When I really get down to it, I only want the 6 speed for trips and I would rather spend the $$$ at Traction Dynamics, which I would benefit from daily. After seeing Don's trailer, maybe a Bushtec trailer.  :nixweiss:

Mark, for curiosity if nothing else do an eBay search.  An acquaintance around here bought a Revtech six speed gear set from some eBay seller four or five weeks ago.  Cost was in the $750 range if I remember correctly.  Gear set required no grinding of the cases.

His was not a bike with a hydraulic clutch.  The set accepted the stock cover though.  Having looked at it pretty closely at the time I thought it would accept the HD hydraulic cover also.  For the cost savings might be worth at least an email to the seller to find out.

Thanks Don  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
But after dreaming about your trailer (can't understand why pink and green fishnet were in the dream) I keep thinking I might rather spend the bucks on:

Hey Mark, Phaze was doing this with his complete 5-speed also.  Haven't asked him but did he have any luck selling it?

I was actually talking about this a few months ago.  Before the 6 speeds came out I read a discription in a Baker add for a 6 speed.  Then when the MOCO started putting 6 speeds in the bikes I read their discription...it was exactly the same.

It made me think of when a buddy of mine use to tell me about a real cool frame a guy was manufacturing back in the 80's and had an ad for it in Easyrider magazine.  He recalled looking for the add again in newer mags but could not find it...a few years later MOCO introduced the softail frame.

Snap-on makes Cobalt tools (in the same foundry), but claims that the Snap-on brand is made with higher standards by union workers...IMHO I would think if Baker makes the trannies they'd say the same thing.

Mark,

Total installation was 7 hours.   I guess in the case of a 5 speed the case maybe more appealing as someone is looking to use it in a build or for full replacement.    Was just making sure you weren't spending more than you needed / wanted to provided you had all the information.

This is the perfect time btw if you don't already have them for chrome starter and chrome inner primary.

MJ, for comparison's sake my 5 speed gear set went for $340 on eBay.  If both of those are indicative of the market the difference means you've got about $200 of labor to play with to justify one way or the other.  I just wanted to keep the original case in the bike.

Sounds like a pretty fair deal for both parties.

Mommas happy now and well we all know how that works.   When are you going to get your lovely bride her own 6 speed.  :huepfenlol2:
