Is there a K&N Filter that is a direct replacement for the stock paper filter on a 2008 model?
BLM,

For 2007 and previous, the K&N replacement for the stock air filter is part number HD-1499.  They don't show a replacement for the 2008, but I don't know if that is because they just haven't updated their catalog yet or if the filter actually changed for '08.  Use the info on the following site to request info directly from K&N:

The HD-1499 does not fit the 2008. I took a chance and bought one and will have to return it.  The bolt pattern is different and so is the breather holes. The K&N site also responded and said there isn't a 2008 filter out yet.

The HD-0800 is for the optional SE air cleaner, which does not come standard on the SEEG or CUSE.  The plastic airbox that comes on the CUSE uses the standard air filter, and the K&N replacement for that filter was the HD-1499 for '07 and previous models.  It appears they changed the air cleaner and filter for the '08's along with the new throttle body, so there is currently no drop-in replacement from K&N for the '08.

Ok, now I get it. Why would you want just a drop in anyway?

Anyway Jerry, I was just trying to get you closer to 2500! ::)

The part number on my 2008 Ultra Classic paper filter is 29633-08.  Is this different than 2007?

For now I want just a drop in because I live in Kalifornia and we are not sure what we can get away with nor do I want to make the bike run any leaner.

You can tell it's different because of the -08 at the end of the part number.

Jerry:

Just to be sure, I'm helping a good friend service his '06 SE Ultra (CUSE), and he wants to keep the stock air box but upgrade to the K&N Filter.  So I take it we need to order the HD-1499?

K&N website doesn't list the SE Ultra in the applications guide.

Thanks!

Ben,

The HD-1499 would be the correct part.  I'm not sure why the web site doesn't list the CUSE, but if you look up the HD-1499 and then go down the list of applications, it fits all Big Twin models from 2007 back with the stock plastic airbox.  The SEEG and the CUSE use a modified stock plastic airbox, with a few additional holes punched in it to allow more air into the box.

The HD-1499 isn't going to give your friend a big boost in air flow, but it is a better quality part that will most likely last the life of the bike with just an annual cleaning and re-oiling.

Reference the K&N HD1499, there is a problem with the air breather tube hole dimensions on the back of the filter. OEM measures center of hole to center of hole 5", the K&N measures 4 11/16 which doesn't sound like alot except that it partially compresses the two rubber breather tubes when installed. This has been reported to K&N officially but frankly they don't seem to interested in make a timely correction to their OEM replacement filter. It has been suggested that compressing the tubes increases back pressure in the bypass system and possible oil misting.

It will be interesting to see what changes HD made in the 08 air filter system. I have been using the 2005/6 SE HD version of a high flow air filter # 29509-06 until I find something else. The AMSOIL air filter element is reported to be a high quality filter with 5" hole measurements.

Hope this helps.

For Black Label Mark,

AMSOIL gave me part # Eaam 46199 for the Air Filter $76,  Eaom 134 for the oil filter in black @ $13.45 or chrome @ $15.10 ?? (Note: the HD and other brands oil filter removal disc tool with the cut out will not work on a AMSOIL filter, the filter is smaller. AMSOIL tech support said they are getting many calls in that there is not a removal tool available from AMSOIL as yet......they recommended staying with the Harley filter !!!!!), MCV 20 - 50 synthetic for the engine and primary,  the just now being released 75 - 110 synthetic gear oil.

It's a split between their 75 - 90 and 75 - 140. I suppose there might be other removal tools like the strap, however, I have the Premium Oil Cooler and there is not room for it. I have to use the same removal tool to reinstall the filter because there is not room for hand tightening.

I just did all my fluid changes today. Hope to get out tomorrow to check it out. Rain next week in the SF bay area.

Hope this helps.
