Well,  I have finally had the time and the weather has finally cooperated enough that I've been out three times now since the motor build.  I've put a couple hundred trouble free miles on her so far.  I am still in break in mode, so I haven't opened her up yet, but it is running smooth, accelerates very nice, no popping at all under decel.  Plugs look a bit rich, but that is fine for now. (thanks again for the map, Howie)  I love the sound of the D&D pipes!  Oil pressure is parked at about 45 psi with the Feuling performance oil pump.  I haven't seen more than about 200 F oil temperature, but it is still pretty cool out...

First impressions of the Traxxion and IDS are great.  I can't wait to get passed the break in mode to really give them a test.  I am not getting a harsh ride out of the Sta Bo bushings, but I haven't have an opportunity to find out if they help in the handling department or not yet...

All in all, so far so good.  It is still hit and miss with the weather, so it will be slow going for another week or two, but it was great to get started...   ;)

Great news Scott! You need some good rides this week to help clear your head! I'm glad all's right with your engine. Mine's very rich now too. But it runs fantastic. It can only get better with a new tune! :2vrolijk_21:

Does the sealer on the header to muffler connection make muffler removal difficult?  I know the mufflers can loosen, but after having a friend experience a flat tire, we were glad the connection was easily opened.  The idea of a pin to keep the muffler from sliding sounds interesting.

The sealer definitely makes it more difficult to remove than it would be without it - but not impossible.  For me, the trade off is worth not dealing with a leaky joint...

Scott

Glad to hear your getting started on your break in too. So far between working +80 hours a week and our wonderful Illinois weather, I've only managed 350 miles myself. Rain this weekend won't help. Have a great time getting her ready for the season.

Oh ya, they have medicine for leaky joints now. Painless.

I finally got an opportunity for some serious riding on my new motor...  Up until now, it has been 30 or 40 miles at a crack.  We took a ride up to the cabin in Northern Wi. this weekend and put well over a thousand miles on.  The bike ran great...  No problems at all.  No leaks, no blow by, nothing.  Temps are good - about 220 cruising the interstate at about 80 mph in 80 degree weather.  That is about 10 to 15 degrees cooler then the pre rebuild 110.  And that is riding two up and pulling the Bushtec.  I have not yet visited a dyno - and I know it is running a bit rich - but the additional power is easily detected!  I am only getting low 30's for mileage (while towing the Bushtec) , but I am sure this will improve a bit when dynoed.  So, this weekend was a milestone for the motor - and it went very well...  :huepfenjump3: ;D :huepfenjump3: ;D

Good report Scott.
Good decisions plus quality assembly is why you are where you are now.
Get it tuned and all will be well.

Congrats Scott!

Scott,

Great to hear. Mine was in the low 30's also until dynoed. Now I'm right at 40 mpg. Can wait till you get her tuned.

So, the next chapter...

I finally got around to taking her to a dyno for a tune - the first since the build.  Last Saturday morning at the 105th, I had John Golden - Rolling Thunder Dyno -  perform a tune.  Up until now, I was running a downloaded program of a similar build...  (I am running a Power Commander)

Here is the short story...  I started with a base run of 98.26 HP and 101.42 TQ - and a really really really ugly fuel curve...  And I had been getting between 25 and 28 mpg.

So John first corrected the fuel curve - then worked with timing and such - and ended up with 120.07 HP and 122.15 TQ.  I am getting approx. 40mpg at highway speeds - 75 to 80 mph...

John also told me he is not in the business of making "happy" numbers.  He assured me his numbers were solid and real - not enhanced to make a customer feel good.  I had not met John before.  He is an old school kind of guy.  Plain spoken - no sugar coating in his words - and real down home sort of guy.  I liked him right off.

Bottom line is I am very pleased with the result of my motor build.  It is conservative compression ratio (less then 10:1) and should be very reliable.  The build has about 3500 trouble free miles on it - and is now tuned for my needs - reasonable power and reasonable highway mileage.  I am satisfied...  Here is the before and after printout...

Beautiful Scott! John did a great job setting your tune up like that. Nice straight TQ curve. Clearly shows how a properly designed build will produce consistent results. The nice flat TQ curve shows that it was properly designed, and that the components are properly matched. Wes did that with our motors. Our tuners did the same with their Black Magic! And the tuning's the key to unlocking the potential of that motor design!
 :2vrolijk_21:
I put this elsewhere, but it should probably be here.
Interesting how you can set these things up so many ways (including real crappy too). Only goes to show you that the real key is an EXCELLENT tune by a CAPABLE tuner! Same thing happened to me going from the PC and that map. I went from 25-30 to 35-40 mpg. Lost about 5HP and 5 Ft-Lbs (126/121 vs 121/116), but runs snappier and is more efficient. I changed to the SERT though, to insure I have an ECM capable of running my motor. I might want that HP/TQ back at the expense of mileage though! ::) ;D ;)

Enjoy your "new" motor now! It's a blast to ride a bike with plenty of smooth power at your fingertips, ain't it? :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

That's nice to see Scott.  Glad you're so pleased.  Better than 100 ft pds of torque by 2500.  That's how you spell "fun ride."

So John first corrected the fuel curve - then worked with timing and such - and ended up with 120.78 HP and 122.21 TQ.  BUT, to use John's words, he was pouring fuel into her to get those numbers.  I had told John one of my goals was compromise of reasonable highway mileage with as much power as possible.  John suggested with this tune I would not get much better mileage as I had been achieving - it would be a smoother running tune, but not a highway runner.  So, I asked him to find the best compromise possible...

The end result was 110.07 HP and 112.15 TQ.  I am at 105 TQ from 2500 to 4000, then climb from there.  It pulls strong in every gear and - in the first two tanks of gas - averaged 38 mpg.  It no longer "lurches" at low rpm - it starts easy, idles smooth, is incredibly crisp thru the entire rpm range.  The improved acceleration is impressive.  And - I am no longer the first guy in my riding group to start looking for gas on road trips!

Scott

Just found this thread. Awesome presentation of the steps to fixing your engine Scott. Even to the uninitiated (mechanically) like me it was informative and the photos really provided clarity. I had recently posted my own thread to try to find answers to this problem with my 07 SERK. Your build has provided much for me to ponder and the suggestions from others also a big help. Having facts instead of generality in the discussion is very helpful. I hope your engine continues to perform to your expectation and that you have many hours of riding pleasure this season. Great job.

Great tune Scott.  These are very good numers for a great touring scooter. Glad to see your CR package worked. This seems to be a solid 110 package. Great tq curve, damn usable power.

Still no fix in sight for mine but she still rides great. I'll do something this winter.
