Randy,

I have been in the insurance business for 20 years, so here is the skinny on your insurance:
Yes, file a claim on your bike policy (not your homeowners -home policy will not cover your bike or car).  You will have to pay your deductible, but that is going to be better than footing the whole bill.
The insurance companies first choice (and yes, it is their choice) will probably be to try to buff out the scratches in the clear-coat.  If the scratches go into &/or through the paint, they will probably have to replace fender or what ever.  Get your estimate from your HD dealer - your dealer will help you explain to the adjuster that your SE bike is not a regular production bike and that it will probably be cheaper & easier to replace rather than try to re-paint.

Roadrunners are a problem around my place also.  No problems like yours - thank goodness.  The little buggers do get up on our patio and peck at the window screens >> I guess those little rascals don't know that I am heavily armed.
I hear roadrunners eat snakes >> if so, they are not doing a very good job, we had a snake get in the house last Monday evening (front storm door did not close all the way after a friend came in).  My Mrs. freaked big-time!..... It was a great laugh for me :D

Randy see if you were back in Conway this would not happen unless it would be a Turkey..... Sorry to here about you mishap, but as you or your insurance will be paying for the parts and not HD you would think that that would speed things up a bit...
Good Luck,
Mike

How about an entirely left field suggestion?  Take the insurance claim, set the original tins aside, and get a really sweet set of custom paint :nixweiss: ?

Randy, I am so sorry to hear this sad story.  I have never seen a road runner, except the cartoon variety, so I had to go check it out.  Who would have thought such a small beast could turn into a monster that could attack your 800 + lb Screamn' Eagle?

Roadrunner
Geography – Range / Throughout the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan and southern Great Basin deserts. They are in all the Southwestern states.

Curious Facts
  • Roadrunners are quick enough to catch and eat rattlesnakes.
  • Roadrunners prefer walking or running and attain speeds up to 17 mph. hour
  • The Roadrunner is also called the Chaparral Cock.
  • The Roadrunner reabsorbs water from its feces before excretion.
  • The Roadrunner’s nasal gland eliminates excess salt, instead of using the urinary tract like most birds.
  • The Roadrunner is the state bird of New Mexico.

Vital Stats
  • Weight: 8-24 oz.
  • Length: 20-24 inches
  • Height: 10-12"
  • Sexual Maturity: 2-3 yrs.
  • Mating Season: Spring
  • Incubation: 18-20 days
  • No. of Eggs: 2-12
  • Birth Interval: 1 year
  • Lifespan: 7 to 8 years, unless one scratches the heck out of Randy's bike
  • Typical diet: insects, lizards, snakes, and black and crimson Screamn' Eagle CVO bikes

Way back in the early 80's I had a Yamamha that looked like some a$$ho keyed in my carport, or at least that is where I noticed it. Called my agent and he said my homeowners would cover it. If I remember correctly, all of my insurance, (auto, boat and homeowners) was written with the same company State Farm, like a good neighbor.................

well it has happened, yesterday, I was doing some work in my shop, as usual at the end of the day I closed and locked everything up. today, as I went out to take a ride, I unlocked and opened the door...BANG.....CRASH..... CLANK!!!!! I looked and there he was, staring at me with beedy eyes, 3 inch claws, and a 5 inch beek!!!! I looked and there was a trail of chit from the top of my windshield down to the gas tank......3 inches wide!!!!! when I was a child my favorite cartoon was the roadrunner....... now, I know why the coyote was always tring to kill that mother f*&%$#%^.  yes, my bros a roadrunner. let me tell you, these are NOT harmless sweat birds. I cannot discuss here on a public forum, what became of this monster, but, I can tell you of the damage this f#&*^&^% did. the chit was easyly cleaned off. and was a good laugh. but, upon farther inspection, the real damage came to light........ front fender looks as though he used it as a skating rink. tank is the same. inner farring is toast. 1 saddle bag scratched to hell!!!!!
I am aware the clearcoat on these bikes is soft, does anyone know can it be buffed out???? I tell you this story in a humorus way, only becouse it keeps me from crying!!!!! I know some of the scratches are to deep to be buffed. but I would like some input on what products and equipment can be used to remove the minor ones.
thanks Randy

As everyone has said, get an estimate for the repairs/replacement parts from the HD dealer.

That being said, I doubt that your homeowner's policy will cover it and the deductible you have will likely be much more than your bike insurance.  Also if you hit a deer while driving in a car, it's covered under your comp portion of the policy and they usually have a lot less deductible.

I was parked with my Nissan Titan crew cab across the street from my HD dealer for one of their open houses and while parked in the Target parking lot I was keyed from my right headlight all the way to the back of the cab on the right side.  Don't beat me up too bad about the Titan, it is made in TN.  It was deep enough to feel it with your fingernail.  The estimate came to over $1,500.00 and I took it to a very good friend that owns a local body shop.  We discussed the worst case that he would have to have his guy repaint the entire side of the truck.  I suggested that it may be only in the clear coat so he had his guy take a look at it.  What they did was to wet sand with 2000 grit until the scratch was gone and the he wheeled out the side and the scratch was gone.  There were even tell tale signs of the original factory orange peel in the paint, we got very lucky.

My reason for bring it up is that the claws on the bird are probably softer than the end of a key and are more than likely just superficial in the clear coat.

Again get your estimate from HD and get that going, but I'd bet that a good painter would be able to get the scratches out of the clear coat and rub it back out to better than new.  The bike's clear coat is much thicker than what is used in the automotive industry.

I'm thinking that other than the inconvenience of the situation, you'll come out very well money wise.

Good luck and let us know how it all turns out.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune and thank you for the humurous, but sad picture you painted with your story. Insurance should cover the damage, I would recommend as others have to press your insurance company to get new tins.

The other option would be to find a good painter. The paint job by a good painter would probably be better than the original tins and you would just have to get the rest of the tins repainted too. You could argue that the whole bike needs to be painted so all the tins match. When I had my Road King painted, my painter told me that the MOCO uses only 2 coats of clear so some of the deep scratches probably won't buff out. A good painter will put 3-5 coats of clear that add more depth to the paint job.

Good luck getting your damage repaired quickly.

Last year went into garage and found my 2005 EG Classic corroded and pitted. Estimate $15000.00 State Farm totaled bike and covered full price for a new one.  Just a thought if you get new tins out of this have old ones sprayed with 3-4 coats of clear then wet sand and polish, should be good as new. You can put them outside as a roadrunner magnet. You could become a really good shot!!!! :bananarock: :bananarock:

I would try the swirl and scratch remover that HD offers.
I've had nothing but good luck with it even taking out the notorious lazy leg boot mark on the saddlebag edge.
I've really leaned into this stuff..seems it works better the harder you rub.  Keeps my paint looking like glass.

Good luck.
