Cracked Valve Guide
« on: September 23, 2007, 09:20:23 AM »

I have the ol 06 SE Ultra and she started running like a POS when I was warming her up the other morning. She started spitting and missing. I took her up to the dealer and they at first though it was a colasped lifter. Now they're telling me after they replaced the lifters, it didn't help and they tore her back down on the back cylinder and found a "cracked valve guide".

Anyone heard of this on any of our motors? I got around 47K on the bike even though this motor only has about 20K on it. I lost the first motor around 26.6K due to a cam bearing. I've also lost a stator & regulator on this thing.. Makes one wonder just how durable these engines really are.. :nixweiss:

I guess my real question is whats next and has anyone else heard of a cracked valve guide and why would this show up now? :confused5:

more common, and will oil soak the plug or create smoke is the leaking valve guide seals. tore down a 07 fxdwg that had the old style seals in it. both heads were leaking at the guides.

Just seems weird to me that after 20K they find a cracked valve guide. I'm sure something must have caused this to happen.. I guess only time will tell.. :nervous:

When I took my 07 CUSE2 in for the SECOND round of the leaking head gaskets (after Nelson trip), the mechanic found the ENTIRE exhaust guide was missing in the rear head (not found in exhaust pipe either).   Replaced head and valves (including guides of course).

Gotta love it....

I put in 2 quarts total over the 9200 miles.....

Haven't had to add any yet since the last "fix"  almost 2500 miles....

That's damn near unbelievable Mark.  No noticable sound and only a quart per well over 4000 miles from a nonexistent valve guide.  I should have stopped installing valve guides a long time ago :huepfenlol2: !

Honestly, it sound and ran just fine -- no smoke either.   It just spewed oil slowly out the rear gaskets -- I just added oil a little bit at a time till I got home.  Thank God it wasn't the intake valve guide....

It really sounds like a little misdirection Mark.  And it certainly fails the sniff test.  Maybe so.... But can't help but wonder if it's one of those cases where a service writer or wrench says something that sounds worse or different is a problem just to keep a guy from focusing on an otherwise repetitive failure.

Doesn't matter though.  Most important thing is they're fixing it; whatever it might be.

I agree, the engine can't operate without a guide at all!  Usally what happens is that the guide drops. It really can't go anywhere. Glad their fixing it!

As strange as it may seem, it’s not unheard of. You have to shake the daylights out of the muffler in order to get the valve guide out.

Not at all surprised that a dropped guide might separate or a broken guide might break in to smaller pieces and find its way to the muffler.  But you really ran for any extended amount of time without noticable oil consumption?
