Seepage
« on: October 07, 2007, 08:20:38 PM »

I have a 06 SEUC with 5,000 miles on her.  Have noticed a black line (oil) on top of the trans case where it bolts to the block. I did not think too much about this when I was cleaning the bike. Well after about 300 miles of riding I noticed that the oil was back. There is no oil on the underside of the motor or any oil on the floor under the bike.  Any ideas as to what this could be.

That is common and nothing to worry about other then it being a pain in the butt for those that are anal about detailing (present company included). Supposedly there is no fluid in this space so there is no gasket, but some of us get this pain in the butt seepage. The only fix that I know of is to split the cases to have this repaired. Most of us have just learned to live w/it by cleaning w/a Brake Kleen to get it off (beware that to much use of this can stain/remove the powdercoat), and others have just covered the offending area.

Had the same thing on the SEEG
Just a little WD-40 on a clean rag would make it go away for a few hundred miles.

I'm betting it's on the black motors but because it's black we never notice it.
At least I haven't on mine.

Here is the part that many have used from Kuryakyn - Rear Cylinder Base Cover for Touring Models P/N 8274 to cover the offending area.

My bike has not collected a single bit of ugly residue along that seam since the seam was covered by the chrome cover.  Amazing how that worked :nixweiss: .

I was actually told that by a tech at a dealership. Makes sense, but can't prove it. :nixweiss:

Gary, if I'd not found the part when Kuryakyn released it you'd have found it shortly though.  Chrome speaks to you man.  If your username wasn't Firedood you'd be The Chrome Whisperer :2vrolijk_21: .

I am fortunate to not have this seepage.  Either I don't have it or don't know what I am looking for.  I'm sure someone in MV will be nice enough to point it out though.   ::)

Bob, it's not actually even seepage; at least not seepage from the inside out.  There is an open chamber behind that seam.  But there are no fluids inside of it.  I've always thought that chamber was what caused it though.  The seam doesn't have a gasket.  The empty space behind it probably causes a bit of difference in temp in that void.  The temp difference might then occasionally cause a slight pressure variation.  And that then catches a little oil vapor.  Or I could be entirely full of poopeekaka.
