Bike Lifts...Looking For Info
« on: February 28, 2005, 12:34:46 PM »

Just getting around to building my new shop and will need to replace my hand-me-down bike lift from a 50's era HD shop.  Basic parameters are:  lift- 4 to 6 feet, capacity 1200 lbs, removeable center tray and sturdy.  Would like to know who is using what and which models are now "state of the art".  Have been looking at misleading ads 'till my eyes are crossing!  Thanks in advance.

Hey BLM

Got a Direct Lift at home.
I researched a bunch of lifts and found this one to be the best for me.

Had thought about one of those that you can slide under the bike and use the drill and or ratchet to raise it. Saw two different brands at different shows and was leaning that way.
I asked for each of the dealers to tell me what shops were using their lifts. The answer was NONE. Said they just sold them for home use. Must have been a reason for shops not using that type.

Kendon makes a lift and if you need portability then it might be good for you. I wasn't impressed with the stability of that unit.

Which left me with only two good choices. (my opinion)

The Direct Lift
Handy Mfg. lift

The Harley shop here added a new service facility and ordered two new Direct Lifts.
They had always used the Handy lift in the past. (bet it was a price deal)
I got to compare the Handy and the Direct Lift side by side.

From a function standpoint the Direct is longer. (Very good)
The direct lift is diamond plate.

BLM

Another consideration is the purchase of the accessory lift from Direct Lift.
It's called a Blackjack.
It is very helpful when you need to raise one end or the other when the bike is on the lift.

And learn from my mistake
Shipping is expensive.
Order both at the same time and save some on the shipping.
I didn't,,, wish I had,,, but so it goes [smiley=nixweiss.gif].

I also have a direct lift and it's great.  I ordered it on a Fri. from N Dakota and had it delivered by Mon in Washington state.  Recomended with no hesitation.  They even called a few weeks after I had, it to ask how it was going.  Haven't had that happen lately wih any other purchases I've made.

I'll throw this into the fray.  It's available in Canada, on sale right now with all the extras for $1099. And, can't go wrong with O/B!

If a good deal on a pre-owned one does not come along, this might be the one for me to get.

Any hands on experience with this one?

I'd like to see a picture of your 'pree-50's motorcycle lift'.  :worthless:
