Well Don, frankly I'm a little confused why someone would ask for help, get an answer, then go on a rant about the answer they got. And he already knew the answer too! ::) :nixweiss:

Just a "little?"  Hell, I'm a LOT confused; but that's just my normal state of being.

Hey UJ,

I was having a re-occurring electrical problem that turned out to be an intermittant short in the ignition harness or plug.  It happened most of the time when the bike was turned to lock position.  You could actually hear the harness rubbing on the fairing (or forks) when the bars were turned to the left.  It might not hurt to have them replace the ignition harness?  It's realitively inexpensive and easy to do.  Worth a shot.

The backplane of the fuse box is typical HD ca-ca...I had to disconnect the power then go behind the fuse box and insure every socket connector was correctly mounted in the fuse block housing.  I found 4 loose, including the culprit.

I was losing the running light circut and blowing a fuse now and then..

Just another wek spot to check if you are getting gremlins.

All good information. I'll mention all to the HD shop. I was monitoring the volt loss and it was really off the chart as far as loosing battery charge. But, there is a very recent twist here. I haven't moved the bike in three weeks (been some snow and icy mornings....), I put a full charge on the battery and it showed 12.61 and it settle down to 12.40 after about three hours. Then I started to monitor it. It only loss about a .02 a day. It was loosing .20+ a day..Now WTF???   The only difference, which should have absolutely no bearing on this, I that I took the fuse box out and reseated all the fuses and one was blown. It was the one that was for the heated gear.  :nixweiss:  Anyway, after a week it went down only to 12.21 in 7 days. Still enough to start the bike...I think, I mean the alarm was still on, and usually by this time it was dead also. This would reflect what the shop had experienced when they had it. """normal""" We really need a smiley thing with the finger doing the "normal" sign that all dealers use!

The norm has been the battery goes down to 4.xx volts in just 4 or 5 days or so. (dead) Ok, I'm really screwed now. I sure wish I'd not purchased this bike and kept my Road King. I know crying now is worthless, but I sure miss the RK. It never had a problem! If not all ironed out by the end of this next riding season, the SE Ultra is getting closer to be a sold bike. For what I have into this bike I can buy a fully loaded Ultra with a 96 inch engine that actually runs and have every goodie on it. Just wish I didn't like the bike in every way, except for these pesky problems. Yeah, loosing its luster for sure!

Thanks for all your posts. It's been a pleasure getting some great advise and possible solutions. Problem is that HD will not step up to the plate and take care of it like they should. I don't really blame the shop I go to, for I don't know all the politics they have to deal with concerning the mother company. They did get me a new motor with out any intervention from me. They just did it. So I think they are trying, just . .   :nixweiss:   :nixweiss:

UJ,
That's the fun of electrical problems, they'll drive you batty in short order.  BUT, you can always figure one out by methodically going over the bike to find the problem.  If it were mine, here's what I'd do.  First I'd try to get it BACK to the point it's killing the battery- now you know you have the short occurring.  Then I'd put a test light between a battery post and a cable.  It SHOULD light, since the short is occurring.  You can now start removing fuses one at a time to then narrow down which circuit the short is on.  Light goes out, there's your short.  Then start working with that circuit to narrow down where the short is located.  It may be in the harness someplace, it may be an electrical component.  I'm betting it's in the harness someplace.  I'm also betting it's associated with the ignition switch, as previously mentioned.  Once you find it, you can figure out how to create it.  Meaning you should be able to short and unshort at will.  Now you either fix it, or you take it to the stealer of choice and tell them how to create the problem and let them "fix" it.  The reason they don't want to do anything with it in the first place is there's no book time for chasing electrical problems.  They're all getting to be part replacers, just like the GD car dealers.  No offense to the few mechanics out there who are doing the right thing- you know who you are!  I applaud YOUR efforts!  F%ck the others!  That's why many of us wrench our own.

UJ,

This may turn out to be one of those problems that is best dealt with if solving the riddle is too difficult. If the problem only affects things when the bike is stored, then popping the maxi-fuse will stop the drain. I understand it's pita to have to do it, but it sure beats driving yourself insane trying to figure it out.

If the bike is going to be stored for a period of time that you feel will exceed your threshhold of remaining voltage, park it and pop the maxi fuse out. No more drain.

In all likleyhood, this problem will continue to get worse and you will find it when it does. Now, while it is just an intermittent problem, dealing with it in this manner might be the best advice to keep you from going nuts.  :)

Electrical gremlins are a beotch, but are usually pretty simple to understand when you figure it out.

Best of luck to you.

I'll agree with what Chief said with one caveat;  Riding until it gets worse could leave you stranded someplace you'd rather not be.  That's the only reason I'd trace it out while I was warm and comfy in my garage. ;)
