Wish we could keep 'em bone stock ...
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:41:19 PM »

 :soapbox:

I am really hoping that I can keep the CVO Ultra bone stock.  It would be a nice change.  The bike came with so many nice things on it already and I think the stock pipes look just fine the way they came from MoCo.  The noise and EPA situation here in California is getting very tough.  Almost anywhere you go in Socal, i.e. Malibu, etc., guys are getting citations for illegal pipes and having to re-install their stock pipes to clear the infraction.  You'd think for what we pay for these bikes we wouldn't have to mess with them anymore.  Let's hope it will run okay so it can be kept "stock" .   :nixweiss:

Yup, it's a damn shame that you can buy other vehicles and just drive them as is, but with a Harley you have to immediately start modifying things to make it run, ride, and handle properly.  Trust me, it won't change until the customers make it change (stop buying the product until they fix the issues).

I think you can safely bet on needing to at least add a tuning device (SERT, PCIII, etc.).  As for the exhaust, I think a lot of us are tired of loud pipes and wouldn't mind sticking with the stock pieces.  At least the new model pipes aren't as asthmatic sounding as they were a few years back.  What criteria are they using in CA, actual sound measurements or just requiring stock pipes?  If they're just looking for stock pipes, there are folks who can modify the stock pipes for you.

I'm thinking almost the same way.  I think I'll add a few little things, like the detachable fairing lower hardware kit 58854-YYXXX (and the storage bag) and the saddlebag support kit 90690-04.

Other than that, I'd like to keep it as it is for now.

I have, but what I keep hearing is to add the SEAC and true duals and pipes -- all things that add more air and less back pressure -- compounding the heat problem.  As I understand it, the SERT is either just now becoming available for the 08's or will be soon, so I'm not sure what the proper fix is for the heat issue.  I only have 120 miles on it so far, so we'll see how it does.  It's been cool here, and the bike hasn't been hot at all.  There was an interesting thread about wide band O2 sensors that can help with the heat problem by significant percentages, so that is worth looking into.

I am not looking for the bike to be loud or have lots more HP than stock yet.  I ride long distances and wanted this bike to be comfortable for the long haul.

I think it is difficult to keep the stock pipes and you still most likely will have to a tuning device for the engine to run how properly. It seems hard to get away from at least adding a SERTor PCIII. For improving the performance and keep your pipes quiet, these might be worth looking into: http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/lsr21blackhole.htm, from what I have read you would increase performance and be legal as far as sound levels.

Well, for six months I did nothing to the '07 SERK.  Then I decided to add the slightly deeper sounding Supertrapp slip-ons.  The FI has adjusted to them well.  No immediate need for a SERT or anything else.  This is it.  Nothing else.  I might go back to the stock exhaust cans.  Zero problems, zero issues, I ride the thing like a race bike at times, and it still looks like a CVO Road King -- something H-D nailed appearance wise imo.

Thanks for spotting that!  Correct number is 46565-04 for the Saddlebag Support Kit.

Keeping them stock is such a noble cause! But for most is unlikely. While most cages can be adjusted dozens of ways, this is not true for bikes! Thus to get your ride to fit you, things have to change...like seats, handle bars, foot pegs, etc. And of coarse all the little good looking additions to personalise your bike to your tastes. So even if more performance is not your thing, things get changed for other reasons! Such is life!

You are right.  I'm already going to order a set of Progressive 440's for the rear.  I had them on our standard Ultra and loved the ride.  No doubt a few other things will change over time as we dial in the bike.  It's just like gravity.  :D

Right on! But I will admit that my SERK is the bike I modified the least as it fit pretty well from the MoCo! Just a little bling and a tour pack were necessary. The slipon Dubb' were because I like the sound....not toloud, just right!

I changed my mufflers  and went to a K&N air filter.  put on the PC111,  but took it out after a few hundred miles.  didn't make a bit of difference. bike runs great and doesn't really get too hot.   next change will be the temp. dip stick.

I have one of the H-D digital temp./oil level ones. The oil level seems to work about half the time, the temp works well.  Since they sit kinda low they get soaked in the rain. My first one leaked, ;D fogged up and quit working. My replacement has not been tested yet. H-D did replace the old one under warrenty!  ;D
