First Ride Report 75 miles 105th Anniversary Ultra Classic...
« on: October 13, 2007, 10:08:12 PM »

It went well, finally our first ride.  The six speed is nice, but I could hear a noticible whine or whirrrring sound as I brought 1st gear up to 3800 and shifted into 2nd.  I can get used to the sound - it is just different than the last bike, not necessarily worse.

This tranny was a bit smoother than the our 2005 5 speed.  The bike overall has a smoother feel and very strong on the power.  This was my first time ever riding a CVO 110, in fact, this is the biggest displacement bike I've ever ridden.  My old bike was a 88 with a 95 kit, no cams, so I could feel the power even keeping her at 4000 and under.  I kept the RPMS varied alot during the ride and shifted through all the gears continuously.

I felt more heat on the left side than the right and it is there, but tolerable.  I will probably go to Progressive heavy duty 440's on the rear and dump the air shocks.  But before I do, I'll bring 'em down to 0-5 PSI and see if they soften up the rear a bit - the wife thought the ride was a little bumpy.  The bike needs to be broken in, it was a bit stiff all around.

No other issues - we love the bike and it ran great.  I adjusted the gear levers to a more flat position, seems the Moco ships the levers in a "V" shape.  I checked the rear cylinder, no leaks.

The XM Radio is awesome and the speakers sound just fine over the stock exhaust.  The stock exhaust sound is quite acceptable and has enough sound to make it a "Harley" but not so much that it aggravates everyone around you.  Besides, it's legal and the new mufflers look pretty cool.

My first accessory at the dealership today was a battery pigtail so I could use my plug in charger/trickle charger to keep up the battery when not in use.  I think I'll also add the windshield trim piece to eliminate those three ugly black screws holding in the windshield.  That spot is begging for a finish piece!  :D  I am sure I'll add a doo-dad here and there, heck, that's half the fun of these beautiful motorcycles.

The bike is outstanding and I think a decent value when you consider all the stuff that comes on these bikes.  The dealer had a regular 08 Ultra on the floor with a few accessories added for $25,500 before fees.  The CVO is a pretty good deal when you add up what you get, plus it has some name recognition as well to add to the value and appeal.

So far so good.  We'll be riding tomorrow.  And for the many folks who asked, my father-in-law is doing better, thanks to all for your concern.  And for those of you waiting for your bike, it will be well worth the wait, trust me, you are going to love this one...

Good report, DD!  I happened to see one today, at a dealer a few miles away.  They were having an Open House, so we stopped after furniture shopping to have a free hot dog and soda and a guy pulled up on one.  It was cloudy out, so I didn't get to see it in the best of light, but that is a really nice, classy-looking ride.  As I got to listen to him pull up and then leave, I would say you're right, the exhaust really doesn't sound too bad on these newer bikes.

On your shocks, do you know what pressure is currently in them?  I don't think you want to run them as low a 0-5 psi when riding two-up.  Somewhere between 15 and 25 I would think would give you the best ride on a 13" air shock.  Nevertheless, the Progressives are definitely a good option to consider if you find yourself unhappy with the ride in the back.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the new bike and also glad to hear your father-in-law is doing better!

Thank you for your response.  When I first saw the bike it looked like a 70' color!  :D  My wife loved it at first site.  It is a different and unique looking color combo.  I think ultimately it will be one of the "love/hate" colors once they are out there and seen more frequently, although with only 1800 of them, they won't be as common as you'd think I suppose.  It grows on you, and the darker bronze is beautiful against the highly metallic black "Onyx" paint.
But it grew on me

That's kinda the definition of a CVO, isn't it?  There are a lot of colors on CVOs that have been bold/risky, but I think that's a good thing.

Meant to say it was funny you mentioned the new SEUC seems "smoother" than the '05 you used to have.  I can't believe the leap in "smoothness" between the '00 SERG and the '04 SEEG, so I guess they just keep on making them better.  Had and '02 Electra Glide Classic, too, and yeah, it was right in between the '00 and the '04 in terms of "smoothness." :nixweiss: ;D

Thanks DD for the great report.  Mine came in this past Tuesday, but my wife and I are on a roadtrip to Arkansas.  I am going by next Tuesday to uncrate it.  I am curious, what number did you get?  ____ of 1800?

This is a pretty common noise in the 06 six speeds to.  Mind was so loud that I was sure there was a problem with the trans.  I was told by two dealers that it was normal and would go away after the trans was broken in.  They were right.  The noise decreased as miles were added.  Completely gone now!

Keep your money down on the bike - you'll love it.  We still can't get over how nice this bike is.  I couldn't help myself.  I drove it down to our dealer to buy the windshield trim piece and a oil temp LCD thingie. The sales people know me and know that I would have easily bought it from them if they weren't 5K over MSRP - they even came outside to see it, as they had not seen any CVO Ultras yet at that store.

Anyway, I took a peek out the window of the store and 6 people encircled the bike.  It's always fun to share and discuss your bike with other folks who also like the bikes... :)
