07 SERK VIBRATION
« on: October 16, 2007, 01:43:43 PM »

I have a 07 SERK. From the beginning, I could feel a vibration at certain RPMs. After multiple DYNO runs
on a friends dyno, his best guess was that the flywheel was out of balance. I took it to the H-D dealer
and they worked directly with H-D factory tech. After checking engine mounts, exhaust system and any
area the engine may touch the frame, they decided to look at the flywheel. It was out of tolerance and they
replaced the flywheel assembly. This process took one month. I am glad to have the bike back
but not impressed with the time it took H-D factory tech,s trouble shooting process.

Sorry to hear about your problems TJD. I'm still going through some similar stuff with my bike.  :( You can read a little about what's been going on and some of the dealer problems in my replies at this thread:

Have you had a chance to ride your bike much since it was fixed? I'm wondering how much improvement you have seen in the vibration department. I'm nervous enough about mine that I'm asking the dealer to balance the reciprocating parts before they put the new crankshaft into it. Good luck with your bike -now it's time to get out and ride that thing!  :orange: If the weather is still good enough where you live...  :P

Bikerboy,

It was in June when I had the work done on my bike. Since then I have put 6300 more miles on. The vibration
before the flywheel replacement was so bad I could not tell how many cars were behind me when I looked in the
in the mirrors. It looked like a herd of them. After the work on the bike, it was much better. I still have a slight vibration but if I put one foot on the mustache engine guard it goes away. Unlike my 02 Road King engine guard the mustache engine guard is like a tuning fork, if you hit with your hand it vibrates for quite a while. The 02 engine guard doesn't do that.

I had a 08 Ultra CVO ordered and with the heat problems on the rear cylinder that some of my riding buddies have
had I am not conviced HD has solved the problem so I cancelled the 08.

I am at the point were I am just going to ride the H*** out of my SERK after all it still has a little More than a year left
on the warranty.

Just glad for you that it got fixed before any more problems arose.

My SERK has developed a serious vibration problem.  Thought I threw the front wheel weights during a ride once and stopped the bike and at an idle it looked like a low rider with the front end jumping off the ground as it was shaking so bad.  I actually thought the engine was going to start knocking on the frame!

Drove it yesterday for exactly 4 miles and brought it home as it didn't feel safe, it feels like the front wheel is bent or out of round when riding.

BTW: My SERK has 980 miles on it....

I have spoken to some well known old school Hd mechanics and they all tell me the crank shafts on the new 110 is fine if you plan to stay pure stock, but if you make any mods you will twist the crank and get vibrations depending on how far out the crank run out is.

I'm going to send my crank out and have it reworked. the following is a quote from a machine shop.

Depending on how many miles you have on it I would get a new engine from HD and then allow us to make our mods to it to help insure long life to you motor.  We can make any crank into a Timken style, we would have to modify the crankcases though.

I believe I can re-man your crank, blueprint, balance it, install our rods and Pro-plug and weld it so it does not twist on you again if they may charge you for replacement.  That cost would be $495 for service and $475 for parts for a total of $970.00  This will be a balanced unit to your pistons and our spec balance factor.

Your other option is to go with a SE/JIMS forged unit, have us Pro-plug and weld it.  That would be charged by the hour, the crank is $1049 plus roughly 2 hours at $75 ($150) for a total of roughly $1200.00  This would not be balanced to you specs, we could also do that, but it ends up to be $1595 retail.

Our retail charge for Timken conversion is $425 with the cases dis-assembled when they arrive here.  We can do what ever you wish, our labor charge is $75 per hour and we stick to lower units, meaning flywheels and case mods.

Robert, let me know what we can do to help you out.
