ZUMO 550 and Techmount 30997MC On The Way!!
« on: October 17, 2007, 03:42:03 PM »

Well, I pulled the trigger on a Garmin ZUMO 550 and a Techmount 30997MC this afternoon.  Should arrive next week.  I figured since Thumper is so friggin' fast and strong now, that highway signs will be a blur, so I'll need the ZUMO to tell me where to go.   :vrolijk_4:  So, do I need anything else to complete the installation?  Isn't there some sort of 90 degree male connector and cable I'll need to connect to the HK?

WHAT!!!!! Somebody call the medics quick I think I've fallen and hit my head. Henry is really getting a GPS? :huepfenlol2:

Seriously though here are a few other things that I shared w/Spyder that you may want to consider...

SOUND PROFESSIONALS - GOLD PLATED 3.5MM (1/8 INCH) RIGHT ANGLE STEREO PATCH CABLE (1 meter length)

Either one of the following two will be good for power plug if you want to use your cigarette lighter.

12V Flush Mount Receptacles & Plugs (Plug Only)

Sealink 12V Receptacles, Plugs, and Both (Plug Only)

The only other thing I did was went to a local fastener store w/the screws that hold the Zumo mount to the Techmount and got some shorter screws. You can see the difference in these two posts - stock screws and short screws.

Yeah........I know..........and I expect to take a beating for the change of heart, but dammit my brain just don't work as good anymore.  Much appreciate the info, Gary.  I'm probably gonna hardwire the power, not because I use the cigarette lighter (I don't), but to keep the installation as clean as possible.  Thumper's lines are so pretty.......I don't want to mess them up anymore than necessary.  Looks like I'm not done shopping.   :2vrolijk_21:

I know what you mean I'm really bad w/remembering directions. In a car it's easy to have a map or directions wrote out so you can pick them up and read while driving, but you can't do that on a bike. Once you get used to having a GPS you're going to wonder how you ever lived w/o it. :2vrolijk_21:

Doesn't having it mapped out count for something? Plus I've made a promise to someone I haven't met yet and I don't want them to call me out on it. :nervous:

Everyone keeps telling me that, but sometimes I like to get lost and find my way home.  Oh well, it'll be there if I need it.

You can do that, matter fact you may do it more often now knowing that all you have to do is hit "Go Home" and get back home.

Henry...if you want to hard wire the cradle, just tie to the back of the cig lighter..that's an easy spot to do it, then run the wire along the clutch cable (depending on where you mount the unit) for the cleanest look, IMO.  Coil excess wire inside the fairing "just in case".

Do get the Sound Professional cable though...makes things a lot cleaner being 90 degrees, and those things are NOT easy to find.  That's one of the few sources I know about, in fact.

I still like my Road Atlas to get a "big picture" in my head, but I can't use a map any longer on the bike...I can look at it during a stop, put it back up, and in two minutes forget the road numbers I need ahead.  It's frustrating getting old like me....

Congrad's on your purchase. I purchased and installed the same setup as is documented in the previous posts (Zumo, Techmount, Sealink receptacle, Sound Professionals cable). Looks and works great.

The one thing to consider of whether you hardwire it is whether you will want to move this around to another bike. I recently went on a trip out west and had a day to rent an Ultra Classic and ride to the Grand Canyon. I had the mount, power cable/cigarette lighter adaptor and allen wrench. It installed easy and worked great. I was able to map out a route the night before - use the GPS - and did not get lost. That was a good thing since I took some very isolated roads and gas stations were few and far between.

Either way you will be very happy and I agree that you will wonder how you lived w/o it.

Well, I don't know if it is THAT, or if my head has reached its storage limits..........sorta like a full hard drive.  Lately I can't remember much new stuff at all.  Information overload.  Perhaps I'm at a pivotal age...........where what once was an extraordinary capability is now nothing more than a distant memory...if that.  Bottom line:  I can't remember chit anymore!!!   :(

Chit Henry, I'm older than you and I haven't lost any of my memory at all. Why, just the other day I was telling--errrrr..
