Saddlebag guard & rails
« on: March 03, 2005, 05:02:32 PM »

Anyone with an 05 seeg2 put rear saddlebag gurads and rails on?  There doesn't seem to be a part number for this.  I'm thinking I want to make sure the bags are as protected as they can be.

jstartz, see here for photos and part numbers (about 6 or 7 posts down) of the saddlebag guards I'm running.  When you say "rails" are you talking about the wrap-around (Classic/Ultra Classic) style?  My $0.02 is that they cover up too much of the paint scheme on the side of the bags and the wrap-arounds themselves do nothing to protect the bags in the event of a tip-over.  In fact, I think you're more at risk to damage the bags with those since everytime you remove the bags you have to be careful not to scuff them on the wrap-arounds.

Thanks for the reply.  I understand about being careful when removing the bags.  This is my first dresser and I'm a bit nervous if seh were to tip over.  And yes, the rails I am refering to run along side the bags.  I agree the disrupt the paint scheme, but I'd probably cry if the bags got scratched.

103thunder,

nice looking scoot.  I also like the fairing mirroes.  How do they attach to the fairing?  IS there any drilling involved?  And thanks for the part numbers for the sasddlebag guards.

Does anyone know the stock seat is notched to accept the forward guards?

As for the decorative guards that wrap around the saddlebags; you won't be able to use them unless you either remove the filler strips between the saddlebag and rear fender, nothing the existing to filler strip, or get a set of the filler strips that are made to accept the guards.

Keep in mind, the only part of the whole setup that is really protecting the bag is the lower bend in the front guard.

103, stick your finger into the area on the seat where you would think that it's relieved for the upper bolt on the saddlebag guards. It is. Also the seat is notched to clear the guards. You just can't see these features because the vinyl is stretched over them. The stock seat will work just fine with the added saddlebag guards. [smiley=earmuffs.gif]

I agree...I have the guards and the stock seat for riding solo.  The road Ring Comfort stich pushes me further forward than the stock seat.  I tolerate it when the wife is on the back...for her comfort.

I wanted the guards so I could have the bags with the holders for water bottles.

mobe, thanks for the correction.  The relieved area must not be as obvious on the stock seat as it is on my Comfort Stitch.  I looked pretty closely at my bike before putting the guards and new seat on but it didn't seem like the guards would work with the stock seat.  If you say it does, I believe ya, but didn't you switch seats to the RK Classic?  Maybe you ran the stock seat for awhile after putting your guards on?

103;
     I go back and forth on the seats. I usually run the stock seat around town and switch to the RK classic sundowner seat when I hit the road......Mike

OK.  I'm convinced on not adding the side rails.  But please clarify, using a stock seat on a 05 seeg2, what part #s do I need to install the guard rails?  Thanks.  And this is a very informative site.

thanks twolane.  I appreciate the info.  There are a few hd stealers that offer 20% off accessories if you know the part # and order on line.  I kinda hate going to the stealer, asking for the part #s and then going online to buy them.  But then again, if they try to maximize their profit, why shouldn't I try to maximize my savings?
