Then neutral went missing
« on: October 22, 2007, 07:20:28 AM »

Next on the list of problems for the SERK3, finding neutral has become nearly impossible.  It used to be you could assume it was an out of adjustment clutch cable, but with a hydraulic one what can you do?  The only thing that was done to it recently was an IDS install, which shouldln't have any effect.  Nineteen time out of twenty it will go 1-2 or 2-1, hot or cold, running or shut off.  Mobil 1 V-Twin in the primary and gearbox.

This has been a complaint of mine from the start.  I very rarely can find neutral with my foot and can only do it by hand, either hot or cold :(

This is a trick that you learn to do on a Beemer to find neutral: engage the clutch slightly (just until you feel the engine start to pull the bike along), pull it in again all the way, and then select neutral. This works for me when I can't get neutral selected easy the first time.

If this doesn't do anything, have your dealer look at it.

Tried everything, clutch dragging slightly, pressure on the lever and drag-release at the same time, never was a problem until the last month or so.  Guess it's back to the dealer again.

An adjustment should take care of this. There is still a means of clutch adjustment as there was with a cable - under the derby cover. It's harder to detect an adjustment problem with the hand lever since the hydraulic system compensates for the slack and you still have a 'clutch' feel - it's just not totally disengaging the clutch pack.

This one has a strange thing happen with down shifting now and then. The shifter seems to go between gears with the ratchet and you sort-of have to start over....It takes some getting used to and is probably more of a learning curve thing....like the lever is not moved far enough.

Try increasing the revs a little and then select neutral. I had this problem in the early days of getting my bike and this worked a treat.

No probs now though.

Just an update for those who are or may be thinking about using Mobil 1 in the transmission.  It's a fine lubricant that likely keeps the gears shiny and clean.  But it also lead to not being able to engage neutral.  I changed to Redline V-Twin gear oil w/Shockproof about three weeks ago, no other changes, and immediately the problem disappeared.

Since I got my bike last year, neutral has been a little hard to find so I have learned when coming to a stop I downshift while rolling and put it neutral. Works every time.

If you over-fill the primary it can be hard to find neutral.

Dump the Syn 3 ASAP. I replaced w/ Bel-Ray and shifting and hitting N was immediately fixed. BTW, lose the Syn 3 out of the other 2 holes as well. You can do sooo much better.

Like he said...

For me Mobil 1 Vtwin in the motor(dropped oil temp 8-10 degrees+ 2-3 mpg)),
Redline Shock Proof for the tranny(find N easier) and Redline MTL for the primary (quieted down the slosh)...

There are many better alternatives to the Syn3 slickum..
