Base Gaskets
« on: October 24, 2007, 03:00:13 PM »

So I am on my way home from Daytona and sure enough the base gasket on the rear cylinder is leaking.  5k miles...It is more of a seepage than anything but still.  It is now at the dealer getting fixed and hopefully they will notice if anything else is wrong and fix it while it is apart...we'll see. :(

the fix is in...they said one of the cylinder studs was not in all the way so there was some seepage up around the threads and then out past the o-ring showing up on the outside of the engine...removed the stud, lock-tited, replaced the oring and reassembled the engine...everything else looked good including the head gasket...we'll see how it is after a couple of thousand more miles.

hd...I will be optomistic about the "fix" the dealer did, but oil is not supposed to be down there in the first place, so would be very surprised if this cures the problem.  On almost all the others, the head gasket allows the oil to migrate DOWN the studs, then out the base, so the problem originates in the head gasket area.  Them saying the head gaskets were "fine" concerns me a bit.  Perhaps they replaced the head gaskets with the newer type, at least. Hopefully, all will be well...keeping fingers crossed for you. :2vrolijk_21:

Don't be surprised if it shows it's head again.   :-\

Well I would love to be optomistic for you, but I think you just got fed the story.   In my case the gasket looked good.  The 4th time it was replaced it only lasted 2200 miles They even gave me a new rear cylinder on this attempt.   Expect to see the issue crop up again and I hope it doesnt.  Mine had occurred anywhere from 2200 - 6500 miles from time of each repair usually around 4500 - 5000 miles.   I have not seen a bike yet that has had it fixed and not returned even with both juggs replaced.   I wish you well with it, but don't be surprised to find it leaking again around the same mark in mileage.   Many on here are on their 2nd and working towards their 3rd attempts at fixing the issue.

It'll be necessary !

Thanks !

I hope to receive fews news the next week.
The french law seems permit to ask the reimbursement or the replacement if the bike is not conform or if the malfunction is important.
