Porthole & Ozzie Pre MV 07
« on: October 24, 2007, 07:24:25 PM »

On Skyline Drive when the bikes where still clean. The best part about not having a plan is well, not having one. We were heading south west out of PA and somewhere along the ride we "turned left" and went about a hundred miles to Front Royal Virgina, where Skyline starts.

Our ride was great and around 6:30pm we decided we would continue off of Skyline and on to the BRP and head to Peaks Of Otter. It would be the first of many nights we rode until well after dark, we were having a blast.
But you miss a lot of scenery riding at night, not to mention the other hazards.

We didn't get to stay at the Peaks, but did have dinner there. We then headed south for more night riding to I think it was Melford.

The next morning we had a beautiful sunrise, gassed up and headed "north". I always wanted to see the Natural Bridge and it was only about 75 miles away  ::)

We found some awesome back roads to take getting there, part of my master plan "GLB-GPS" getting lost by GPS.
We both had a fondness for old buildings and barns and the picture below is about my favorite form the whole trip (next to the Bald Eagle of course).

Pictures do not do this work of art by nature justice.
We didn't know it at the time but Route 11, which we came down on, travels over the Bridge

Before it died several years ago this was supposed to be the oldest living Arborvitae tree in the world, estimated to be 1600 years old  :2vrolijk_21:

These initials, carved into the Natural Bride are said to be George Washington's, done when he surveyed the area.

This was on another fantastic road leaving Natural Bridge, VA, heading northeast and looping around back to Lynchburg, VA.
No guardrails here, you could walk to edge and easily "fall" off. There is a coal train running along the river in this picture
While we were here, 2 flatbed tractor trailers (unloaded) were "racing" "up" the hill! I estimated that they were easily traveling well over 60-70 going up the hill. We were relieved to actually be stopped when they were there, that would have been a scary sight in the mirrors
