Ozzie & Porthole "Post" MV 2007
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:54:33 PM »

OK here we go.
After most of you left Sunday morning we headed west and had breakfast at the Mountain View Restaurant. Good down home food with a great view. From there a leisurely ride west and back to Fontana Village area. We went back to the Dam hoping for another glimpse of the Eagle, but no such luck.

Fontana Lake, about 90' low here

Never really paid much attention to this waterfall, have you?
This is on Rt 28, aka the Hellbender, on the way towards the Dragon.
There was no water flowing here.

We stopped at Deals Gap and did an up & down on the Dragon. We staged our running on the way down to try and get both bikes in the pictures. The picture below is a low resolution shot grabbed from the Killboy site

After the Dragon we headed south towards Robbinsville.
About 2 miles north of 129 on 19 is the entrance to Wayah Rd  :2vrolijk_21: 30 miles of twisites, just plain awesome. Very similar to the road we did Saturday coming back from Asheville
The picture below is somewhere along Wayah Rd.

We headed into Georgia on some more great roads. Come to think of it, I don't think we were on a road for the whole trip that we didn't enjoy.
Went down through Helen, the Oktoberfest is in full swing there, with lots of people. We ended up in Athens again for the evening (9pm). This was the night my new HID headlight started blipping on and off  :-X

Another early start to a beautiful sunrise and we were on our way to South Carolina

I'm not sure where the trail is, but the whole ride through SC was nice, lot of history here!

We rode to Charleston, didn't tell Glenn why, just sort of roped him into it.

In June of this year 9 Charleston firefighters were killed in a devastating fire in Charleston, SC

http://cms.firehouse.com/web/online/Charleston-SC-Tragedy/Reports-Say-9-Firefighters-Killed-in-South-Carolina-Sofa-Store-Blaze/56$55139

Most people who were not in the military, police of fire service wouldn't understand, but I knew if I was within a days ride I would have to go.

These Charlestonites (?) are very proud of their new bridge. Very similar to the suspension bridge in Delaware, except this one had cables coming down both sides of center

One lane was closed of some type of roadwork, made a great place to pull over and get some pictures.
This is the USS Yorktown, now a museum

From Charleston it is a short ride to Sullivan's Island. More old houses and a genuine fort, Fort Moultrie.

This triangular lighthouse is very close to the beach and walkways.

More private parking spaces  :2vrolijk_21:
In this picture you can see my new magnetic camera bag on the gas tank, made it much easier to take pictures, rather then keeping it in the saddlebag.
