2007 POLICE BIKE RECALL
« on: October 26, 2007, 09:13:07 AM »

A friend forwarded the attached letter to me recently.

Makes me wonder why the 103's in police bikes needs ACR's and the CVO 103's don't.  Does anyone know what the difference is in these two motors?  :nixweiss:

I'm thinking that it's due to the totally new drive train stup in 07 in weaker.  The 07s have the new sprockets in the primary, new starter design, and this may reuire mote torque to turn over.  07s have had compensator loosening issues, starters grenading, ring gears stripping.
Anyway that's my thoughts.

Don't you just love how they put in there "While this is not a safety issue,..." Looks like a little "CYA" going on there. :-\

The police bikes were getting so many more starts than a normal use motorcylcle that it was told to me the cost of the starters they were tearing up and down time was killing them and the way around it was to put on new heads with the ACRS and turn on the functionality in the ECM to make it work.   That was just what I was told as the dealer had like 30 of these in for retrofit.   With more coming.

So to repair some potential hard starting issue you're going to install ACRs that may fry their harness and shut you down doing down the road?  Talk about a Catch 22?

Don,

Thus far in my tear downs and rebuilds I havent even had a wire cover melt at all.   Don't really know how you can account for this, but playing devils advocate it is a hell of a catch 22 for the lack of being able to explain why some have the melts and some don't.

Harry, with as many gotchas as you've suffered you're fortunate to have missed this one.  It's not been report nearly as prevalently as many of the other problems of course.  But I can remember three (I think) from the group here who have had ACR harness issues of some kind.  Also know of one non-site member who had an ACR harness issue as well.  It ain't a lot.  But it's more than none.  Apparently a short in that harness forces the ECM to shut the engine down (even while going down the road).  So even one is a big deal.

What's the CR on the 07 police 103's?

Compression release.  They are having new heads installed equipped with automatic compression releases so they will start without tearing the starter/ringear and associated parts up.
