Sunday Ride with Terry and Suzanne
« on: October 28, 2007, 06:41:49 PM »

First order of business, we ain't got no pictures.  Renea and I brought our camera, but the battery is dead, and Terry and Suzanne didn't bring their camera.  Anyway, the track from my GPS is posted below.  Maybe Terry will post his when he sees this.
Renea nad I left our house shortly after 9am this morning and headed down US231.  We rode to Arab and made a right onto AL69, which feeds into US278 into Cullman.  We meet Terry and Suzanne at the Smith's Farm store at Exit 308 off I65.  From there, we doubled back to Arab, continued on AL 65 to Guntersville, where we picked up AL79 to Scottsboro.  I'm sorta new to recreational GPS usage, and my route planning proved that today.  Good thing I know where Triple R BBQ is.  See the picture and look near Scottsboro, and you'll see what I mean.  Roundy round.  ;D  Anyway, we ate at Triple R BBQ.  Terry and Suzanne had the chopped pork BBQ and Renea and I had catfish.  We got gas, and then Terry led us on a nice ride around the Tennessee River and Lake Guntersville.  Once back in Guntersville, Terry and Suzanne got gas, and we each headed home.  GREAT afternoon with really GREAT friends.  Renea and I had a blast, and are looking forward to the next time.  It was a beautiful, cloudless day in north Alabama, and the temperature was absolutely perfect for riding.    The only bad part is all good things come to an end............and that sucks............but it was fun while it lasted.  Good thing there will be be plenty more days like today.

As a matter of fact...burps aren't nice in a full face  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Good eats though, and even better company.  What a fantastic day for riding in North Alabama...the leaves are just getting a hint of color in places, crisp, blue sky, and some really nice roads.

We rode all the way back to B'ham after parting company with Henry and Renea on Hwy 79...a nice two lane hwy through farmland and rural communities...just cruised back in no particular hurry to get home.  This has got to be my favorite time of year to ride in this part of the country.  Henry's bike is running/sounding good, and definitely puts out some hellacious torque...those Rush muffs have a great tone as well.

Henry got a taste of the infamous "GPS U turn"... ;D ;)

Yeah I did........WOW.........HUGE lesson learned for me.  You gotta zoom way in, or that thing will lead you to some place you've never been and take you to New Mexico to get there.   :P  Well...........that's a bit embellished, but you get the point.  Good thing I know the area.  I'd hate it if I was somewhere I didn't know.  Great Afternoon tho.  Had a great time.  Renea is still smiling.  She really likes the way Thumper can get down the highway.  The scooter will scoot........quick!!   ;D

Don't feel alone I learned that lesson the hard way also. I zoom mine in all the way then zoom it back out one click and leave it there. You miss some detail zoomed in that close, but less chance of missing a turn and having GPS recalculate all the time.

Ya know, I figured the thing would be smart enough to redirect, but when a route is in there, it is stuck on it until you meet up with it at another point.  Case in point, look at the track.  You'll note Renea and I did a doubleback on US278 to AL69.  The route I planned was to take us to Cullman via AL 69 to 278 as shown, and after we met with Terry and Suzanne, we were gonna cruise down 278 to 231 and head north to AL 69 in Arab.  Basically it would have added a few more miles and a right angle to the track.  Well, Renea and I enjoyed AL69 so much that we decided to double back with Terry and Suzanne, so they could enjoy it as well.  That friggin' ZUMO kept telling me to turn around....yadayadayada..........RECALCULATING!!!!!!!!  UGH!  for the entire 20 miles back into Arab, when it finally figured out that it was where it was supposed to be.  I turned the sound off.  Jeez!

If I'm understanding this right you had a route programmed that you made off Mapsource and decided to venture off that route and the Zumo was telling you (recalculating) that you had gotten off it? That's a normal occurence if you go off the route you've created. I think if you turn the route off while you freelance and then turn it back on when you pick the route back up again you'll avoid that. If I remember correctly it will ask if you want to be directed back to the start of the route or pick it up where it is (or something like that), and you can continue on the route.

Another thing when you create custom routes on Mapsource (something other then letting it pick the route for you) you'll want to zoom in real close when you put turns in. Otherwise you'll end up putting turns on the wrong side of the road, missing ramps, etc., etc.

Yea....and when you plan a route with via or waypoints, make sure they are exactly on the road, or it will want you to turn off into a neighborhood or shopping center, then back out and on the road again.  I've also noticed that my route will sometimes want to take me off the hiway on a ramp, then right back on.  I think it has something to do with the preferences settings.  When I planned the vacation route down the BRP, I had to pick via points pretty closely, or it would want to take me off the parkway for a few miles because it was shorter.  Picking via points very close together seems to be the only way I can prevent this, or I'm stupid and don't know how to work the damn thing....probably the latter.

It's not perfect, but is a powerful tool for navigation on the fly.

Yep, you're spot on, Gary, however I'm realizing that experience with "other" forms of GPS doesn't do one much good with ZUMO.  I have alot to learn, but then again, I just got it last Wednesday.  I gotta figure out the menu levels, so I can turn off the route and then turn it back on again when I meet back up with it.  I'll get there..............eventually.

It'll come to you with time. :2vrolijk_21: Once you figure out the little quirks it will be easy to manipulate. I'm still learning stuff it can do.

Unfortunately, Gary, it has been my experience that I MUST learn everything the hard way.   ;D  I s'pose I need to take a good dose of patience before I sit down to create another route.  It isn't difficult at all..........just "involved."   ;D
