fuel mileage
« on: October 30, 2007, 07:15:08 PM »

I just got my new ultra and have a question regarding fuel mileage. I had the race tuner installed by the dealer before delivery and on the first ride I noticed a huge fuel consumption issue. I ran out the first tank in about 110 miles, after filling completely, I ran another 115 miles to the low fuel light and put in 5.4 gallons. This does seem a little excessive to me. My 06 Se ultra averaged in the high thirties to 40 mpg. Any thoughts on what might be going on? The guys I was riding with said that their kidneys held more than my gas tank!

Hey 2002redeagle. I've got an o7 SEUC. It's got a 5 gallon tank. I can run anywhere from 140-160 miles on a tank. I was getting more than that before they tuned it. Sounds like maybe its running a little too rich now?? you did shift to 6th? LOL

I have a '04 SEEG w/a 103ci motor with the mods you see in my signature and averaging the same per tank.

Have an 08 SEUC with race tuner & V&H slipons am getting 38 mpg. I dont trust the miles to empty so i haven't ran it all way down. I can get about 160 miles before i fuel up & it only takes 4.9 gallons.

Only a little over 21 mpg? ???  The tune is definitely suspect.

This past Sunday, my last mpg check shows Thumper running 34.6 mpg.  I'm running a Power Commander.  Other mods in my sig.

the bike only has 350 miles on it and my dealer said that it should improve with break in,,, I have had a new eagle every year since 2002 and this is bar far the worst mileage so far. What surprises me is that the performance is quite good, a rich condition should make it sluggish,  right? the throttle is much more responsive than the 07 even in higher gears it launches with throttle. I guess a few more miles will tell the tale. My dealer is installing a dyno that will be ready in about 2 weeks so I believe I will see what the numbers are like post dyno.  by the way thank you guys for your responses, i appreciate the input!!

My SEUC², RH TD, PC111 gets 39mpg. I usually push it to about 170 before fuel.

They must have downloaded a canned map to the bike.  That is really poor milage, even if the bike isn't broken in.  Even with really hard riding, two up and loaded, the worst I get is 32 mpg, with a best of 41.  With that much fuel, I'd be a little concerned about the rings being able to seat properly.

To get that poor of fuel mileage, it seems like the thing would have to be smoking like a diesel.  My SEEG was rich on the initial tune after I had the 575 cams and Rineharts installed and smoked, as several folks on the board witnessed.  With a re-tune, that is all gone.  My gas mileage picked up about 1 or 2 mpg, but was still pulling down 36 with the rich tune.  21 mpg, holy cow! :o

Did the guys you were riding with see any smoking from the pipes?

38 mpg on my 07 SERK with SE251 Cams, 50m TB, D&D Fatcat 2into1 pipes.  And that is usually riding pretty hard/fast.

Do yourself a favor pull your spark plugs and take a look, my guess is they are black.    Even with break in you should be getting 34 - 42.   I can see them being a little over zealous with the fuel to be sure break in goes well and all, but unless your just pounding it light to light like you stole it you should be getting much better mileage than you are currently.   Even with all the mods to all of our bikes at the house here we are getting in excess of 36 mpg.

The spark plugs should tell you the story.

My Hawg is getting about 35ish.  You should be way better than what you mentioned unless you ride full throttle everywhere?!LOL

Well I pulled both spark plugs this evening,,,, both are light brown in color on the electrodes with no sign of excessive fuel. As I said before the bike performed very well , and I would assume that a rich mixture would make the engine somewhat sluggish. I plan on putting a few more miles on this weekend and willl watch the fuel comsumption closely.Again I want to thank you guys for your thoughts on this, any ideas are appreciated.
