Definition of a Veteran

A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life."

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Poignant post, thanks. I hope I don't seem pushy here because I've already posted this elsewhere but FWIW those who are interested you can check out http://soldiersangels.org/ or http://anysoldier.com/ if your so inclined to help. My wife and I support both and can attest to the fact that it only takes a few minutes to make a difference in the "volunteers" lives. I can't say enough about it. Please take a minute and check out these sites and pass this info on to friends and family.

I've included a email sent to us by a soldier in Bagdad at the time and this blew my mind - the fact that he would ask for so little!! From his email...

"This is Raquel and Howie's e-mail, right?  I hope so...anyways, thanks for all the stuff you guys have sent.  It really meant a lot to me.  I had a decent Christmas this year thanks to the two of you.  I'm sorry I wasn't able to send replys right away.  It's just that they keep us infantry boys pretty busy.  But I finally got to a computer so I had to say thank you.
When I get to back to the states I'll have to pay a visit and thank you in person.  There isn't really any material things I need and I really don't have a lot of room for them anyways, but thank you for your offer all the same.  I do love the snacks you guys send though, and I don't mean to seem picky, but I'd love some home-made snacks like no-bake cookies, or brownies or something."

Picky?????? I couldn't believe it. He is giving everything and all he wanted was home-made snacks.

Thanks for listening,

Howie :soapbox:

Amen!!!! Some (like myself) do it, and are out before they are old enough to buy alcohol in most states. I went in when I was 17, turned 18 in boot camp, and was out before my 21st birthday. I could drink at the clubs on base but couldn't go to ABC in the civilian world and purchase alcohol (legally that is ;)).
