Any Aquarium Hobbyists on Board?
« on: November 01, 2007, 07:14:01 PM »

Just got done doing some monthly maintenance on my 75 gallon saltwater fish only aquarium.  Was wondering if anyone else had freshwater, saltwater, or reef tanks on this forum.  Maybe I'm the only nerd.  Have been doing this since 1991.  Currently have 2 clown fish, 1 yellow tang, 1 naso tang, 1 yellow tail damsel, and 1 clown trigger.  My favorite to keep is an Australian harlequin tusk but am not to successful (looking for a small one now).  Second favorite is the clown trigger.  Normally get when they are about 1 1/4" and trade back in when they are 4-5"..

Back in my former life as a FL resident I had a reef tank of the same size. Even had a 300 at one time, but never got it set up before I sold it off.

Bob...I used to keep a lot of freshwater tanks...all Rift Valley Cichlids (sp?).  I've come close to doing a Salt Water tank, but have never taken the plunge.  Many moons ago, I worked in a large Tropical fish store here in B'ham...we had several hundred freshwater, and some salt.  I used to set up tanks for offices, decorate them naturally, and maintain for a modest fee.

Nothing nerdy about a beautiful tank...you've got some really nice fish too.  The Clown Triggers are really neat fish... :2vrolijk_21:

My wife has four tanks running currently. All fresh water. Got me as to what size they are or even what is in them. I do know that if one springs a leak I'd be really mad when they destroyed my stuff in the rec-room below them! :) ??? ::)

Had a fish only salt tank and an Oscar tank in college, then switched them to one all South American Cichlids and one all African Cichlids. I found the color of the African's almost as colorful as a salt tank, but with a lot less work. None set up now though.

Terry-
Working once in a fish store and setting up tanks for clients, you probably didn't want one of your own.

Puzzled-
You definitely don't want a leak.  Luckily, if set up right, no problems.

LabRat-
I don't find a salt tank to be a lot of work, the worst part of a salt tank is the salt creep.

Chief-Wish I had the expertise to do a reef tank.  They can be beautiful.  The only downside is the kinds of fish you can put in a reef tank which are quite limited.

True, salt creep was a pain and I guess looking back on it, it wasn't so tough....The rewards, though were great, particularly when you have a single room in the frat house...IYKWIM  :cucumber:

I can only guess what that means, but it sounds fun!

Used to have a 90 gallon reef tank. In our beginning days Kathy and I rented a place from a my fathers friend. He came into our apartment and cut the air conditioning off. When we got home the tank temp was over 90 degrees. Lost all the living coral and all the fish but our snowflake eel. Could never get the tank back to where it was before, even after we moved. Added chillers, uv steralizers, you name it we had it.
After the eel died we took the tank to the pet shop to let them use it for display. Then the owner died, and his wife gave our tank away.
Never went back, now have the atlantic ocean .5 miles away. Can look at it as much as I want and no upkeep costs :2vrolijk_21:

I kept several tanks but quit when the kids were semi-little.

Too much trouble since I was traveling so much.  Had an outside goldfish/guppy "feeder" pond at the time that I used to keep the bass, sunfish, oscar, or whatever else I had indoors that liked live food.

I scuba now & its like being inside the tank, but bigger.  ;D
