navigation system
« on: November 04, 2007, 06:59:02 PM »

anybody else's navigation system get confused about what direction you are going?  several times since I activated the nav system the small compass icon  is completely wrong about the direction the bike is traveling.  I thought since this happened in Georgia the first time it was because I was 1000 miles from home but lately it is even happening here in Connecticut.  anybody have similar symptoms?

The compass feature is about the only thing on mine that is worth anything.
I clamped my Garmin Quest 2 on and all is well now.

Did you go with the HD faring or handlebar mount for the Quest2?  I’m in the same boat, I like the idea of the navigation on the radio but I also want the visual of the map.  I’ve been using a Quest 2 with HD faring bracket on my Road Glide and planed on moving it to the handlebar of the SEUC.  Guess I’m just a nerd but I like seeing the map and all the stats the Quest has and know they are not on the radio nav unit.

I have the handlebar clamp.  I was using the Quest2 on my 02 Ultra, so after figuring out that the radio navigation is pretty much worthless, I moved the bracket to my 08 SEUC, since I already had it.

The nav system can get a little squirrely if you are going slow or if it switches satellites on you.  I don't know if the nav satellites are in geosynchronous orbit or not.  To give you a direction the software is comparing where you were to where you are and plotting a line.  It doesn't work like a magnetic compass and can only give you a direction if you are moving.  How long does the direction error last?  Does it correct itself pretty quickly?

Most things tend to break sooner or later.  My Zumo 550 I had for 9 months stopped working complety and was sent back to Garmin for replacement.

See, now that's scary.  >$700 GPS fails prematurely.  Are they making these things in China?  With lead?   :huepfenlol2:  Mine is working........for now........but it's been just about three weeks.  Hopefully it keeps on working.

At least from what I hear Garmin customer service is top notch unlike some company's we have to deal with.

You got that spot on, Gary.  That one experience little over a year ago is still bothering me.  Because of it, I'm automatically on the defensive hardball side when it comes to warranty challenges.  Sheesh.......I've become a real peckerhead.   :huepfenlol2:

Follow-up note:  Garmin replaced my Zumo 550 with a brand new unit.  I am satisfied with how Garmin handled everything and the 8 day turnaround time.  Rich  :drink:
