Oil Filters

I just picked up this months American Iron magazine, theres a nice article about oiling and filtration. In the article is a comparison of filters, I'll add below. Good old HD right at the botton of this list!!!

After GRC's report on filters, just about everyone here uses K&N's..  I would use K&N's filter for the removal nut alone.

What effect would the difference in bypass valve pressure have?

I believe it means the pressure at which unfiltered oil circulates thru the engine.  GRC (Jerry) had a real nice filter comparison a year or so ago.

The bypass valve setting controls the point where the oil bypasses the filter and goes straight to the engine.  This is a safety feature that keeps a clogged filter from starving the engine for oil, under the excellent theory that dirty oil is better than no oil.  The pressure is not the actual oil pressure produced by the pump, but is the pressure drop across the filter.  A bypass that is set too low will let dirty oil circulate through the engine more often than necessary, and conversely one that is set too high could defeat the purpose of the valve by not allowing oil to bypass the filter when it should.  Try this old thread for more information, including a link to the original article by Donny Peterson.
