Yes, at the head you have 2 nuts that hold it on. Front and rear, my rear came loose. Wonder if it's from the heat the rear cylinder gets. On our Caterpillar engines it's not unusual for the exhaust studs to break off or nuts come off behind the fuel system. It is a heat issue, expanding and contracting. I only remember hearing others mention about the rear manifold coming loose. Any ones front nuts come off before??? ;D

I think Hogbreath lost his rear cylinder nuts also a few weeks ago.  He had problems finding the proper thread and finally went to the dealer.  Glad NAPA came thru for you.

It looked like 5/16 fine thread, that's what I got and screwed right on for me. :2vrolijk_21:

Did you find a prevailing torque lock nut, or just a free running nut?  If using free running nuts, I'd suggest using two per stud, with the second one as a jam nut, to keep from losing them again.

Went with the free nuts :o :D ;D :huepfenjump3: They didn't have the lock nuts! I got two extra nuts but did not jam nut it. I used lockwashers and I know with the heat they can break and come loose but just wanted to get home. I'm due for my 25,000 service and will replace with correct nuts.

I'm glad to hear you're going to replace the nuts you lost with nuts of the same type/size. :nervous: :huepfenlol2:  Don't forget, the same guy that put your nuts on also put my nuts on.  I hope I do not lose my front nuts or my rear nuts! :o

   I was just thinking, maybe a safety wire solution would be the best approach.  Check the yellow pages under "body piercing"; couple holes and some stainless wire might do the trick.  :shocked2:

My nuts haven't fallen off......yet.......as I tend to take very good care of my nuts.  Frequent exams prevent nut loss, but just in case, it is always a good idea to keep a couple nuts in a sack.  That way you know you have the right nuts.  Having the wrong nuts could be a bad thing, especially if you use the wrong thread pitch...........then your shaft would be stripped.........then things other than your nuts start falling off..........and if you think nut loss sucks, well...........yeah.............   :'( :'( :( :(

Great idea, Jerry!  You could safety wire one nut to the other across the pipe.  Might just work.   :huepfenlol2:

It's been about 20,000 miles since "Rosey" put them nuts on or about 1 1/2 years. If he did not torque correctly it would not have lasted this long! Heat and vibration is what I'm betting on. I would have to say your nuts are safe from "Rosey" but I would do self exam on all your nuts to see if there is any change what so ever. Early detection could save you a lot of pain down the road! :huepfenlol2:

Jerry, I just took some vise grips and clamped down on stud and turned back and forth enough to mare up the threads so the nuts would Gaul going on and won't come off again without a torch or welder. :2vrolijk_21: :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2: :2vrolijk_21:
