How hot does it get?
« on: March 14, 2005, 11:21:30 PM »

Ok get your minds out of the gutter......Was wondering the temp of your oil.

Was riding this weekend in about 75 degree weather, both on the hiway and some twisties and noted that the oil ran between 220 and 240 degrees. Seems kind of high to me since it really was not that hot out. I have the LCD temp dipstick was wondering what others with the either the LCD gauge or the Roger McEwan gauge. I know that I can't really on the accuracy of the HD gauge.

that's exactly why I don't put a oil temp. gauge on the bike.....I don't want to be constantly reminded how hot it's running.  I'm more concerned about the amt. of oil somehow getting out of the oil bag....where is it going?  It's not leaking.  That syn. oil is so slick I have trouble seeing it on the dip-stick when it's hot. Dude, I have the H-D dipstick.  The only time I run in the 220's is when it's below about 60 out.  Otherwise, I'm in the 240 range.  I think I've been as high as about 248.  What you're seeing seems right in line with my experience.  I don't worry too much about the temps with the Syn3 in the crankcase.  I usually only hit the button to satisfy my own curiosity.  I have never had the heat management system kick in, so I figure it can't be running too warm.

Heat management system....basically, Bike runs like $hit(adding more fuel I believe) then stalls.

Had this happen in downtown Newport last summer idling in the traffic too long...I think I was closer to 270

Last night I started the install of the McEwan in-dash oil temp gauge.  Gauge is in but the bike is still in pieces...hopefully I won't have any left over but I am missing a 5/16" 1/4" drive socket that fell but did not hit the garage floor.  For the life of me I can't find it!  So I gave up and went to sleep and will deal with it tonight.

thanks, Bill.  This just happened to mine in Daytona traffic and I didn't realize that it was a built-in heat mgt. system.  Any idea of how hot  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] the motor get before damage occurs?

I run Mobil 1 20w50 and have never seen above 240deg. even on a rare 100 deg. day.

I had a temperature sensor fail on a 1998 fuel injected FLHR and the bike shut down thinking it was overheating. Of course that was the old Magnetti fuel injection, which wasn't worth a crap!

I suspect the new Delphi system would richen the fuel a bit during over heating,  but would keep runnin.

Well, like WFP said, the bike started running bad, then actually stalled.  That's what just happened to mine in the stalled downtown Daytona traffic.  Sooooo, it does sound as if there's some kind of heat compensation deal going on w/ the fuel mgt. system to the point of shutting down. Heat management system....thats new to me. I did not kow the bikes had this "feature". I guess its a good thing, Well it seems as though my temp is in line with others but it does seem pretty high for a bike with the oil cooler[smiley=nixweiss.gif].

Jim, I got up to 230-235 this past weekend, on my trip down Hwy. 49.  That's about where my Ultra ran, too.

These bikes do indeed have a heat management system. I don't recall the exact temps where this occurs but initially the mixture is richened, then if the temp continues to rise the cylinders will only hit every other time, ( they will skip every other power stroke), and will indeed run like crap to protect the engine.

Exactly right . The system first lowers the idle in order to reduce the number of combustion events per minute. If the temp is still drifting higher the AFR is richened then if the temp is still rising the system induces a miss to control temp but only at idle. The system is automatic and H-D says the changes are seamless and cannot be detected but I disagree. When mine gets real hot, approaching 300 head temp, you can see the tach needle start to vary a little more indicating that the system is taking over and causing a miss to help limit additional heat buildup.
