Oversized Wind Deflector
« on: November 13, 2007, 09:24:47 AM »

Has anyone used the smoked oversized wind deflector? Saw it in the catalog... 3" taller than the stock SERK. Looks like it might be OK for my height( 5'11").

As long as you look over it.  It will be too dark I believe to look through it at night.

Looking over is great. Buffeting with either a full or 3/4 helmet is my concern.

I had one and didn't like it at all. I then went to the stock Road King and liked it except I looked right through the top edge. I now have the Clearview with the curve and it is by far the best for me at 5'8". I used the stock Screamin Eagle 7 bolt frame and it works great.

That is the same size that comes stock on the flhrse bikes. I have already ordered and returned one. Harley mistakenly calls the winshield a mini wind deflector. It is really the oversized shield.

I made the same mistake as hdbrad03. The one you got with your 08 is the smoked oversized wind deflector.

Hdbrad is right. This IS the wind deflector that comes on your '08 SERK. It's 14" above the headlight. An alternative is the mid-low profile Road King windshield which is 18" above the headlight, and at 6', I look OVER it, and the buffeting and turbulence is reduced enough to wear a half helmet. I've heard people get good results with the Clear View 17" above headlight windshield with recurve. The problem is you'll wait probably 2 weeks to get one. Being an impatient sod, I wanted one NOW, so I bought the mid-low profile Road King windshield (above), and I've very happy with the choice. Clear View or H-D mid-low profile will work well. Good luck!

I went with the Clearview 17 inch. I had to wait about 4 weeks, but it is worth the wait. High quality, nice look. I'm 6' and look over the shield, but the "recurve" throws the wind off enough where a half helmet is fine.

There you go! Another satisfied (and patient) Clear View customer!

By the way, if the 17" Clear View works as well as the H-D 18" mid-low profile, I'd say go with that. That one-inch-less height ill make it easier to look over.

I have the 17 inch Clearview with the curve. i also used the light tint. I think it keeps the glare off at night. You can stillsee through it . Just a thought. Billy

FWIW, I'm 5'8.5" and went with an 18" Clearview with recurve which took 6 weeks to arrive!!!
BIG improvement over the stock SERK 3 windshield. Moved the airstream up to the top of my head at speeds up to 6o mph or so, BUT at higher speeds, it seems to me that the airstream moves DOWN such that it again begins to buffet my eyewear.
So, I now picked up an oversize (22" height) road king windshield as well, but haven't yet been out with it to see if it's any better at higher speeds.

Did you buy the windshield from HD? Does it fit on our stock windshield frame? I'm talking about where the windshield screws onto the frame that fits the quick disconnect.  I no my stock SERK windshield is a lot closer to the bars than the one I had on my 02 RK. I need something to stop the wind buffing and forcing my half helmet from ripping my head off?

I bought mine from Clearview. The shield bolts onto your 7 bolt frame and snaps onto the windshield mounts without and adjustments. Don't want to make it sound too easy - it's a bear to get the frame, which has double sided tape on it - off the original shield!
