I went to ride the Road King yesterday, and was dismayed when I pulled it into an upright position and went to reach for the knob that you use to give power to the bike so I could see the neutral light, the knob was already in that position.  No use for the battery tender if the bike was somehow (neither of us can figure out how on earth "this" bike could have been turned on and left on.  We seldom ever ride this bike.)  But - it happened.  We put a charger on the battery and it appeared to come up, but if you turn it back onto trickle, it falls back down again.  Do we just need to buy a new one?

Hi Mrs.We,

Let me tell you about my experience. Had the bike to the dealer this summer for routine service. It was a nice day so they set the bike outside with others waiting for customers to pick them up. When I got ready to leave I found they had left the switch on and it was dead dead! They said no problem we'll put it on charge. After about an hour of fast charge it wouldn't even turn it over. So, I said lets put a new battery in so surprisingly they did and all was good after that.

It can be really tough on a lead acid battery to be run dead. It might be worth a try to charge it for a couple days and see what happens. On the safe side, replace it.....   :2vrolijk_21:

Candy,
It is my understanding once the cells in the battery die they never come back to be able to hold a charge as good as before. Not knowing how long the switch was left on to totally drain the battery you may just want to get a new one. Would hate for you to feel comfortable w/it holding a charge then fine yourself stranded somewhere w/a bike that will not start.

Was afraid y'all say that, but suspected that to be the case anyway. I can't remember when the last one was bought, so maybe it was just it's time.    .... Is now.

Was a beautiful day, and my bike was in the shop, so we used the time to add some pretty parts to my husband's bike.  He's had the parts for more than a year.  I actually got to hold some wrenches.  Don't know what they were called, and had to be helped with each and every bolt, but I got to take some bolts out and put some bolts back in.  It was kinda fun.

He added the Screamin'Eagle shift linkage and the push rod covers.  What a pain in the butt it was to only be able to turn those little wrenches a tiny turn every turn.  But, a little turn a bunch times, and it finally worked to get bolts off and put them back on.  I was way easier once he finally listened to me and took the air cleaner cover off.  When he went to put the wrenches in the bolts to tighten them back down, he asked why I had not asked about that sooner.

Dry cell YES

 Wet cell NO

Don't know how many of you remember, but they used to sell you the battery dry and give you a box of acid large enough to fill the battery at least twice. I kept a lot of my bros on the road by dumping the old acid out, flushing out the battery and putting a fresh fill in.
