Helped a stranded rider this AM.
« on: November 13, 2007, 11:05:32 AM »

Decided to ride the bike to work this AM as it was a balmy 70 degrees for a low temp. I leave my house around 4:15 am so it was very dark and we're out away from the city. About halfway to work I saw a guy on an E-glide laying down beside his bike. I did a u-turn and asked if I could help. Seems his kickstand spring had come off and when he looked in his factory tool pouch there wasn't a pair of pliers. I had a cheesy cheap pair that I put in my tool kit, and we did manage to get it back on. I also had a flashlite that helped a lot, but probably needs new batteries. So I know two guys who are going to add a decent pair of pliers to their toolkits today.  ;D Also, I used to have some zip strips that we could have used but I gave them to a Beemer who needed help a while back. I only mention this for two reasons, one if feels good to help a fellow rider back on the road, and two for everyone to check your tool kit if you haven't lately.

Good Job helping out another in need - a good man you are indeed!

You are so right about the tool kit.  Yesterday while adding a couple of parts to Jamey's bike, we discovered that his on bike took kit had a few parts that had wandered.  With some searching we found missing/misplaced parts, took out some duplicates and added some missing.  It has proven to be a valuable resource for ourselves and others more times that I can count.  It is like checking the battery in the fire alarm - once a year check out the quality of the kit.

Thanks so much for what you did / do and for the reminders.

Stopped @ Lowe's on the way home from work and picked up a decent set of pliers, but not too big. Something you can grab on to and not bust your knuckles like we did this AM. Also got a few batteries and when I got home added some zip ties, checked fuses, etc. Last time somebody needed a fuse, I must have given them the box.  Now I'm good to go.

What goes around comes around.  Good of you to help GC & good advice on keeping the old tool kit fully loaded as well. :2vrolijk_21:

A big :2vrolijk_21: on all counts.  Needed to remember those big zip tie I keep(or used to, gave em to a guy on a road glide to fix his shift linkage) in the bottom of the saddlebag

Aj, you'll need 2 trailers to carry all that stuff. :coolblue:

I made a copy of your list. It seems that every road trip I have a problem and need another tool. Made a copy of your list and will compare it to what I cary on the road......Thanks

Holy Crap AJ!! :o
Believe it or not, you forgot two important things...
1.)  a trailer hitch to tow, 2.) your Craftsman rolling tool chest. 8)

Seriously, there are some items on that list that I need to add...thanks for posting it.

I will just ride with AJ, he'll have everything.  :) because I barely have room for fuses.  Once I wrote an article for the HOG newsletter on how to pack for long distance rides with emergency items to bring.  I actually left out the tool section.
Thanks for sharing AJ.

Great thread.  I will start to gather this stuff up when my KTP is done.

All I have in mine is a kimber 45, extra butane, cigar cutters, cork screw and full flask of Makers.

Just saw this thread title.  Didn't help a stranded rider any time recently.  But I did fight for a young lady's honor last night.  Then she slapped the snot out of me.  Seems that despite my best intentions she wanted to keep her honor after all  ??? .
