Troubleshooting help please
« on: November 14, 2007, 10:35:14 AM »

My bike is a 2001 Ultra running the Zippers T-Max M&M to Delphi Conversion Kit with Auto-Tune. My speedo is acting up, and does the following:

The needle fluctuates between 10-80mph in a back and forth sweeping manner.
When the bike comes to a stop, it hangs up at 15mph, then drops down.
After taking off, it hangs at zero, then jumps to the current speed.
Acts like a tach and revs up and down with engine speed.

When this happens, the cruise and AVC do not work, and I have to pull over, shut the bike down, then restart it. I have cleaned the speedo pick up sensor in the tranny. After speaking with Randy Dull at Zippers Product Support, and describing the above, he believes the speedometer unit is going bad. So my questions are:

Is there a troubleshooting procedure for the speedo on an ’01 Ultra?
Is the unit repairable, or just replaceable?
Is the speedo on an ’01 Ultra interchangeable with other years?
Is there anything else I can look for or do?

Howdy Mark,
I'm not smart on TMAT, and really dumb when it comes to M&M, but.......have you tried removing the TMAT, and reinstalling your stock ECM for the purpose of seeing if the TMAT might be your trouble source?  If TMAT isn't the trouble source, then I'd look at speedo replacement.......after ringing wires.

Mark,

Henry makes a good point about trying the stock ECM to make sure the TM/AT isn't the problem.  I owned a TM for a short period of time last year, and noticed some minor speedo irregularities during the 30 days I had it on the bike.  Those issues disappeared when I decided to return the TM and went back to the stock ECM with a PCIII.

If that isn't the problem, before replacing the speedo (big bucks) you may want to try changing the speed sensor (smaller bucks).  Cleaning  the metal particles off the sensor is a good first step, but you may just have a sensor that is starting to die.

VSS sensor failure is very common, cleaning most times will not cure the problem. Being that the VSS failure will cause issue with the IAC motor as well.  Do you have the correct hrz for the speedo input?? that will cause some of the issues you are speaking of. Do the turn signals cancel correctly?? if not the setting is off.

GMR, turn signals cancel correctly (Finally...yaaaaaay!!!!). I cleaned the sensor of fuzz again today and took it for a spin. The speedo behaved properly for a while, then started acting up again. I think the sensor is bad, and it needs to be totally fuzz free to work. I'm thinking that once the magnet starts getting covered, it whacks out. I'm also going to check grounds too.

The VSS on my SERK would show neutral flickering in 2nd and on steady in first after the motor/tranny got hot due to expansion.  There is no adjustment and these are very sensitive. Yours is most likely on the edge and warmed up its out of wack.

Sounds like checking the grounds and replaceing the VSS would be the easiest/cheapest things to do at this point.  Let us know how the new VSS works out.  Good luck.

Well I went over the bike with a fine tooth comb this weekend. I checked all the grounds and connectors, and even the back of the speedo head. I also replaced the VSS. Still no change. So I'm going to see if Zippers will send me a 3rd ECM to try. Hopefully that will resolve the issue.

I spoke with Randy Dull at Zippers Support. The good news is that he spoke with Danny Fitzmaurice and got the OK to send me another ECM. The bad news is that they are out of stock and should have production orders filled in a couple of weeks. So once again, I'll pay for it on my credit card, and when it comes send them back the one I have and have the card refunded.

This makes it FOUR (4) Zippers ECMs in a year. I wonder that the record is?

And to think,
Someone recommended that I consider the zippers conversion for my SERG.
I won't mention any names but that person did build Henry's bike and did a damn good job at it.

Money wise you are less to go with a carb conversion. Overall I think the Zippers MM kit is ok , we have done a few and I think the biggest issue is the large change in elevation here that causes problems.   I thikn it it better but not any where near as good as a delphi unit. So the carb thing works out to be less money. And many are not into lap tops and tuning the bike etc. It is a good option for some dont get me wrong , just not every one.
