Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SE Pro Twin Cam ACR Heads (#17166-08) and SE Pro Twin Cam Forged Pistons 3 7/8 bore (#22137-08)

My dealer is recommending the above head/piston combination for my 2006 FLHTCUSE (103). This would be part of a build that would include gear driven cams, a larger throttle body, and possibly the Screamin' Eagle Billet Cam Plate and High Volume Oil Pump.  I currently have an SE High Flow Air Cleaner Kit with K&N Filter, Rinehart True Duals with the Performance Baffles, and a Race Tuner on the bike.

                                                    I HAVE QUESTIONS!!!!!

1. Anyone have any info on these heads/pistons? The matrix on page 49 of the 2008 SE Pro Racing Parts catalogue shows they fit the 103, however, the description of the heads top of page 47 is a bit limited.

2.What is a CVO combustion chamber shape? It is a hemi shaped chamber? (see picture top of page 47 2008 SE Racing Parts Catalogue) I can't tell by the picture.

3. What gear drive cams would be appropriate for this head/piston setup to increase low end torque? (haven't discussed this with the dealer yet?) Would like lots of pull from 1500 rpm - 4000 rpm.

4. I am thinking of a HP throttle body, what size would be appropriate .... 51mm, 55mm, 58mm?

5. Aside from gaskets, cylinder studs, pushrod kit, wiring harness for ACR kit, what else would I need? SE Roller Rocker Arms, SE Tappets, etc...... ?

6. The compression for this head/piston combo would be 10.5:1, might that cause a detonation issue?

7. Do you like the Screamin' Eagle Billet Cam Plate and High Volume Oil Pump?

I know this is alot to digest, but I would appreciate some input regarding this potential build.

Thank You,

(maybe I should just call Wes Brown from cyclerama and let him put a package together, lol)

Mornin' Tom,
I can't talk to everything you've asked, but I can offer up what I did in response to the questions listed above:

2.  My SE103 heads were hemi shaped.  Reading in the Twin Cam forum tells me the same holds true for SE110 heads.  My new heads are bathtub shaped, and according to my builder, they "squish" better.  Based on the butt dyno, I tend to agree.

3.  For the heads & pistons in question, I have no idea.  I do know that matching cams to headwork is imperative, so if you're gonna go with the heads you list, be sure you find a set of matching cams.  My builder did an excellent job for me in that arena.  I have TQ I haven't explored yet.

4.  Take your pick of TBs.  The more you flow in, the more you must flow out.  I chose to have my 44mm stock TB bored to 48mm, but I can always replace it with something bigger and be able to realize bigger gains from the engine.

5.  As for the lifters, I think the stock HD lifters will do you right.  My builder tells me he's seen premature failures with the SE lifters.  And you might want to rethink the ACRs and opt for manual CRs, since others here have experienced melted/shorted ACR wires from the heat generated at the heads.  ACRs are just two more electrical gizmos that will eventually fail.  The hard part about manual CRs is remembering to engage them.  I had to put a note on my dash reminding me to do so until I developed the habit of engaging them.

6.  I'm certain the SE cam plate is awesome, as is the high volume oil pump..........but I didn't go that route.  I'm really liking my R&R cam plate, cover and my 2007 new style oil pump.  The R&R cam plate uses not only the clamping architecture of the stock cam plate, but draws additional stability from the stock cam cover attaching points.  Thus, it has it's own cam cover.  Really beefs up stability for the cams, oil pump and pinion.  The 2007 oil pump is much more robust than the stock, and I never drop below 18 psi at idle.  Oil flows!!!!  Nothing better than a good, strong heart.

Well, I don't know if I've helped as for as the items about which you're inquiring, but I hope I've been able to share my experience with the build that was done for me.  Whatever you do, I wish you the best..............and if you'd like to speak with my builder, let me know, and I'll put you in touch with him.

Henry,

Thanks for your input! I have rethought the build and am waiting for a proposal/quote from Wes of Cyclerama. He has a build thats called the "CNC Ultimate Street" that looks impressive.

The only 2 cents I'm going to add here is that if you're going to do different heads, I'd probably make another choice than the ACR SE heads.  Problems have been relatively frequent with the ACR's and associated wiring.  It's easier just to do the manuals.  You could have your stock heads welded up and made to work well, if the 103 badges on the heads are important to you.  From all reports here, Wes does a good job.  GMR Performance is a good choice as well.  Both places will stand behind their work.  There are other good choices some here might provide.

The HP 51mm TB would be a good choice, IMO.
