Septic tank
« on: November 15, 2007, 10:40:14 AM »

We have an engineered mound septic system.  I change the filter in the outlet (leech) end of the tank every six months.  System appears to be functioning normally.  Was outside with the Boxers this morning and I noticed this.  Is it normal?  Is there anything I can do to fill in the area......like order a truckload of topsoil or sand to spread around the perimeter of the tank?

I'd considered that, Howie, but then they wouldn't match the grass.  The tops are supposed to be exposed.  I'm concerned about the ground settling around the perimeter of the tank, which shows the outline of the tank itself.  Just wondering if I can fill it in with dirt/sand.

Has this appeared reletively suddenly?  What I'm getting at is what are you actually concerned about?  Ground settling slowly over time or tank percolating up for some reason?

Question? How old is your system - I ask because what you have (mound) Does have a limited life meaning it need to be dugup and hauled off by eviroment handlers then replaced the same way (Depends on your local laws).

Form more infor try Googleing your system, If it was me I would just fill it in and not worry about it.

I'd think if tank was percing, it would be mushy around the tank.   It isn't mushy...........no place in the entire lot is mushy.  Don't remember it looking like this last fall, and our grass was nonexistant one year ago.  Came in heavy this summer after laying down copious loads of coastal bermuda seed, fertilizer and choking through 4 months of >$300 water bills.  The ground is settling.  I'd like to fill it in and blend with surrounding terrain, but my concern is, will it be an annual effort?  House is 17 months old.  The whole reason I'm concerned is I also have a 500 gallon underground propane tank, and the dirt around it has remained level since day one.  Seems a bit inconsistent.............or maybe the propane company did a better job of filling that hole than the septic tank company did of filling the septic tank hole.  Of course, the propane tank is three feet underground with a one foot diameter service opening, and the septic tank is a mere three inches below ground level..........or it is supposed to be anyway.  No big deal.  Just wondering the best way to blend it back into the terrain.

A mix of dirt and sand will level everything back out, Henry....the grass will grow back up through it next year.  You might want to wait 'till next year or the babies are going to get dirty in the new dirt every chance they get... ;D

17 months.  The company that did it tells me about once every four years the tank will need to be pumped out.  Other than that, it should last for the rest of my life.  I feel I have one of the better systems in my development.  Most have these pumps which pump waste from the discharge outlet to the tank......and their septic alarms are going off all the time.  I guess their houses were built lower than their yards.  That would suck..........having sewage backing up into the house.  I don't know if anyone around me has experienced that, but I'm certainly happy that my house is higher than my tank.   :)

It's not a problem in the yard Henry.  It's gravity.  Somehow you got yourself some extra gravity around the tank.  Or you have exceptionally high localized atmospheric pressure.  Or your neighbors are tunneling.  Wait, it's gophers!  (or the Chinese coming through from their side ??? )

Yeah, we found that out last year when the house was new and the back lot was bare.  We ended up shooing 'em out in the front yard to do their business, since it was sodded.  Little Springer is one hell of a digger, and Annie Bea ain't no slouch in that arena herself.  Springer still has one hole he's working on.  Can't quite break him, but he's way better than he was.

Back home in Tennessee it was the moles.  Our Sassy Girl.........since deceased, God rest her Boxer soul..........was hell on 'em.  She'd see the ground move and she transformed into a backhoe.
And at our Tennessee place, shortly after we bought it, I had to replace the entire septic system and relocate the leech field to a different area via 120 feet of 3" schedule 40 PVC from the tank to the field.  That was fun............. ;D  But with 30 minute dirt, all I had to do was run 440 feet of 10" graveless pipe for the leech field.  Still working great today.

I thinks it's the gravity thing. I know it must be stronger where we live too because every time I look down at my stomach, gravity seems to have more control...  :drink:
