No extra hardware for the formatting itself.  You'll control that through software.  Whether you'll need the adapter or not will depend on whether your computer has a slot for the kind of memory card you're using.  If it has no card slots you'll need an (inexpensive) external reader that will plug in to a USB port.  None of this is a big deal.
More then likely the only thing Howie will be doing to the SD card is putting music or other data on it, and that can all be done thru the Zumo. Plug the USB cord from Zumo into your computer, computer recognizes the new drives (SD card will be last one), and then just transfer (copy) the files over to the SD card. Safely remove the drives and you're done. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks Gary, Don and Rich! :2vrolijk_21:

Ding, ding, ding! Sounds simple enough. That seems to be what I'll be doing with it Gary. Can the same card be used to put data on it for multiple devices? Can you use it let's say,in a camera and the Zumo, and keep both sets of data on it, and just swap the cards to each device? Does each device only see it's own data, or will I actually get all the .jpg pics on the Zumo, if the card is used on the camera and Zumo? :confused5:

Look out, I'm getting a new toy I know almost nothing about! :o

The Zumo will read pic files (jpg) so it will be able to see them. When you go to play music on the Zumo then it should only pickup the music files (mp3). Never known anyone to dual purpose them at the same time so can't say whether it would be a conflict or not. :nixweiss:

What a great question.  I'm gonna love having another 'newby' to this Zumo asking questions that I feel like I'm the only one in the world that doesn't understand.  :confused5: har!  :drink: spyder

Hey gang, lemme know if I screwed this up. I ordered the Zumo 550 with the GXM 30 XM Smart Antenna, and a 8GB SDHC Flash Card. Should'a confirmed it before ordering it. Is the 8GB card OK with this? Thanks. :2vrolijk_21:

Hoist! 8)
I am using an 8gb card with no problems. Had a 4 gb and upgraded to an 8. The initial start up is slower, as should be expected,  but no other issues. (Sandisk 8 GB Ultra II Secure Digital { SDHC } Memory Card W/ Reader). I have mp3's stored on my pc in media monkey and have not had any problems downloading the songs to zumo. Good luck and have fun. jj

Does the Zumo give you the option of playlists, or other iPod-like playback functions?

I think so Chuck, I know for sure you can choose by artist and I think playlists as well.

I create playlists on media monkey and just send them to my zumo. Can then utilize playlists or select the individual artists that I want to hear. jj

That's the obvious connection Gary.  Some of the readers will have a faster transfer rate than a direct connect to the Zumo though.  Since this is Howie we're talking about figured it'd come up eventually....

I guess I'm just going to have to wait until the Zumo 650 or Zumo 750 comes out. Since the 550 already connects to the XM30 antenna for music and traffic, I'm hoping they soon take it to the next, and very logical, level and add the full XM Weather suite, i.e. NEXRAD Radar.

Until they do that, I'll stick with my 2610 and continue to keep my fingers crossed and check the Garmin site weekly for the new model.
